Conversations with Matthew White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew White.

Hi Matthew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started as a kid at 12 years old going to farm Auctions with my father and I would buy the cheap stuff and sell it to Antique dealers on the ride home occasionally doing quite well after commercial fishing. I started buying architectural items and making furniture out of them this led me to Roundtop, Texas many years later and the rest of this history we kept buying and selling and building, and as the time went on we ended up seeing a deficit of lodging in the Roundtop area and decided to build out of shipping containers to be able to showcase our salvage materials.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a long, strange trip if I can quote the late great Jerry García

After dropping out of college, I ended up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, making ends meat and then New York City and then fishing boats off the coast of New Jersey and one night everything changed me, Antique dealer who brought me into the world of architectural. Then this little town in Roundtop Texas came on my radar from a great friend Mark Dooley- who knew I’d end up in Texas. There’s been many ups and downs financially ideas that were dead ends that you wonder why you did them but in the end everything we do gets us to where we are today good bad or ugly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Growing up, they said ADD kept young people from focusing they were daydreamers well it’s true. This thing they call ADD has been one of the most amazing superpowers I never asked for. Some of the things that have come of this are the ability to be fearless and trying new things if it doesn’t work go left if it does work continue on that path. I’m proud of that! Our company has always gone down the road less traveled maybe sometimes because it was easier and other times because nobody else was on it we’ve been known as the guys that can do anything/ from building shipping container, hotels to dismantling famous states like Doris Dukes estate in Hillsborough, New Jersey, salvaging and saving historic artifacts across the US building, unique homes and supplying materials for designers and home builders as well

How do you define success?
That’s a tricky question to define success.

For me, success has been the completion of a project that I knew would be good but allows others to say OK so you’re not completely crazy

Successes, deciding whether I wanna go and do something today or not having the ability to do so I’ve created a lifestyle that is one that I’ve chosen not one that I’m forced to- that to me is success
