Meet Dyan Lofton of Austin, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dyan Lofton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From an early age, I learned the importance of giving back to the community that raised me. I grew up in East and Northeast Austin, attended Austin public schools, and graduated from John H. Reagan High School, now Northeast Early College High School. Shortly after I graduated, my father founded a nonprofit organization, and I immediately became involved—volunteering where I could, mentoring young people, and assisting with grant writing to help advance the organization’s mission.

After completing my undergraduate and graduate education, I returned home committed to serving my community. I began that work at the Department of Family and Protective Services and later at Caritas of Austin—two organizations that allowed me to make a meaningful impact. At DFPS, I served as a call taker for reports involving abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable populations. At Caritas, I briefly served as a government grants and contracts manager, supporting efforts aimed at ending homelessness in our community.

Even with those contributions, I knew I could do more. That calling led me to law school, where I pursued a legal education with one goal in mind: returning to my community to serve at an even greater capacity.

I began my legal career as a prosecutor in Travis County, where for approximately four and a half years I advocated on behalf of victims and worked to uphold justice. Today, I serve as the Managing Attorney of Austin Legal Access, a nonprofit law firm dedicated to making legal representation accessible and affordable to members of our community. In that role, I handle uncontested family law matters, criminal defense cases, probate administration, and estate planning.

Through Austin Legal Access, I have partnered with numerous nonprofit organizations to expand access to legal services. Between 2024 and 2025, I provided free wills to community residents, helping families preserve and pass on their assets. I also currently host two to three free monthly workshops focused on estate planning, educating community members on essential legal documents and empowering them to prepare for future medical and financial decisions.

In addition, I proudly serve as a court-appointed attorney representing indigent individuals facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected as they navigate the criminal justice system.

While I also maintain a private practice for those who do not qualify for nonprofit services, my mission has always remained the same: to provide compassionate, competent, and accessible legal representation to every individual I serve.

Outside of my legal work, I continue to volunteer regularly with nonprofit organizations throughout our community, and I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Surprisingly, my journey to where I am today has been relatively smooth. I have always believed in following purpose and passion. When you follow your heart, you often move through life with fewer regrets. While some chapters have required more grit and perseverance than others, each experience has shaped who I am today—and I would not change a single one.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in criminal defense and probate administration, with a practice rooted in compassion, integrity, and meaningful client connection. I am known for my ability to genuinely connect with those I serve and for treating every client—and every person I encounter—with dignity and respect. The feedback I receive from clients speaks volumes about the care, trust, and confidence they feel throughout the legal process.

I truly enjoy what I do, and at the heart of my work is a passion for helping others. When someone is deeply committed to their purpose, it shows in their work ethic, their service, and the impact they leave behind. I believe it is my compassion, integrity, and competence that set me apart and allow me to serve others in a way that is both effective and deeply personal.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I cannot point to one single person who has influenced, inspired, or shaped me. Instead, I am a reflection of many people, experiences, and circumstances that have each left their mark on my life.

Compassion is a recurring theme in who I am. In a world where we do not always see enough of it, I believe deeply in treating people the way I would want to be treated—with care, understanding, and respect. That belief is at the heart of how I live, how I serve others, and how I approach my work.

And when I encounter people in this community who lead with those same values, I am reminded that good people still exist. Those moments are reassuring, inspiring, and a reminder of the kind of world we should all work to build.
