Exploring Life & Business with Oksana Day of Tru Art HR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oksana Day.

Hi Oksana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the US in 2011 from Ukraine with very minimal English language skills and no work US experience except a few months of waiting tables. My first job here was a cashier at HEB, after 6 months I moved to back office to an admin assistant position and started to get exposed to a little bit of HR world. It was wild for me how much employers did for their employees since in Ukraine I’ve never heard of companies providing so many perks and benefits to people. Through my curious nature and insatiable thirst for knowledge my life became saturated with learning more and more about HR. Over a decade I have been gaining knowledge, experience and education and one day my friend who is a small business owner asked me to help him with a few HR issues. This is when it hit me that I have a lot of expertise to offer and also that small businesses can’t afford having in-house HR, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need help. Today I run an HR consulting agency, servicing clients all over the US.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A journey like this is never smooth, it’s hard work, late nights, burn outs, self-funding, learning how to run own business along the way, plus combining that with having a full-time job, being a single mom and caring for aging parents. No one told me that being your own boss was much-much harder than having a boss

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Tru Art HR we help SMBs to focus on growing their business, leaving all HR concerns to us. So many small business owners try to do DIY HR and it eventually gets them into expensive trouble, whether with compliance, employee turnover and burnout, wrong people in the wrong seats, to name a few. We tailor our approach to each organization separately, focusing on the individual needs rather than cookie-cutter HR solutions. We like to see ourselves as HR maestros that bring creative solutions to everchanging workplace demands.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
It’s very hard to take big risks when you are a sole income earner and have 3 people completely depend on your. As much as I wished to just leap 100% into HR consulting and building my own business full-time, I had to make sure that I maintain my day job and business building happened at night and on weekends. So many holidays and ‘vacations’ were spent in front of my laptop and on the phone. I had to play it safe, but even starting this business was also a risk, a risk of putting countless hours into it and seeing it go nowhere scared me so much, the thoughts of whether I am even experienced enough to offer advice to others still firmly sits in my head.
