Hi Peyton, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business journey at a pretty young age. In high school, I began creating and selling succulent planters on Facebook Marketplace, which quickly turned from a small side hobby into something I realized I was truly passionate about. That passion eventually led me to open my own storefront, Petals by Peyton, in downtown LaSalle, Illinois, in November of 2019 when I was just 20 years old.
Opening a business right before the COVID-19 pandemic came with plenty of unexpected challenges, but it also taught me resilience, adaptability, and how to think creatively under pressure. Over the years, I’ve grown Petals by Peyton into more than just a flower and plant shop. It has become a community-centered business known for fresh florals, houseplants, workshops, events, and giving back through acts of kindness.
Today, I’m proud to not only run a successful business but also be deeply involved in my community through local organizations, workshops, and initiatives that support others. My journey has been built on hard work, creativity, and a genuine love for connecting with people, and I’m excited to continue growing both personally and professionally.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was opening my storefront at just 20 years old, only a few months before the COVID pandemic hit. Like many small businesses, I was suddenly faced with uncertainty, changing regulations, and the pressure of figuring out how to keep my business running during such an unpredictable time.
Beyond that, being a young business owner often meant having to work harder to prove myself. There were moments where people underestimated me because of my age, and I had to learn quickly how to navigate the responsibilities of entrepreneurship, leadership, and financial management all at once.
Running a business also comes with everyday challenges like balancing growth, staffing, inventory, and the emotional weight of carrying so much responsibility. There have been stressful seasons, setbacks, and moments of doubt, but each obstacle has pushed me to become more resilient, creative, and determined.
Looking back, those challenges played a huge role in shaping both me and my business. They taught me perseverance, problem solving, and the importance of adapting, and I truly believe those experiences are a big part of why I am where I am today.
