Today we’d like to introduce you to Akeelah.
Hi Akeelah , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my journey in cosmetology when I was 20 years old out of neccecity. I married young and became a housewife at 19 and I was miserable. Honestly I could have become a plumber or an electrician as long as it was a night school and started immediately. That was 14 years ago and I don’t regret the decision. I began by styling clients after school that I gained by posting on craigslist, then I moved on to working at a salon on Ft. Bragg after graduation. Since this time I have relocated to Corpus Christi TX and then settling in Killeen Texas where I have been for the last 9 years serving the local and military community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to where I am has been filled with lots of tears, burnout, imposter syndrome and heart break but after it all I can see these experiences were meant to grow me, not harm. I have given up on myself more times than I can count. Not for lack of clientele or income but for lack of believing I was worth the success I had worked so hard for. I have worked myself so hard and burnt out so drastically that I hurt people in my personal and professional life. I have opened salons with the sheer intent of teaching and growing other stylists only to be met with resistance envy and turmoil. My entire mission in the hair industry was to make sure that the people who actually have the skill and passion can make the money they deserve and not be bogged down with the pressures of having to become an entrepreneur to do so; and here I am back fulfilling that mission with an open heart.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the owner and chief marketing officer of Kairos Hair Salon and Kairos Braid Salon. We specialize in healthy hair; simply put. We operate with integrity as it relates to style choices that could negatively effect the health our clients’ hair, we don’t throw around verbiage like “protective style” if we know that the hair will indeed not be protected because of damage. Whether a client is getting a braided style or a silk press we shampoo every client we touch. I am most proud of my team. My managers are some of the most trustworthy, proactive and productive women I have had the pleasure of working with, my stylists’ professionalism, bedside manner and care for the clients far outweigh their tremendous talent and my social media manager is truly unmatched when it comes to staying on trend and conveying the vibe and flow of the salons online. I believe what sets us apart is that we have a team of passionate people who are not overworked and able to focus on the love and art of their craft. They show up to work knowing that the social media, booking, outreach and campaign curation is taken care of and their only job is making a magical and intentional experience for our clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Marketing makes me happy. I’m currently enrolled in college as a marketing student double majoring in data analytics and mentoring and coaching. Prior to enrolling I have taught many marketing classes and helped several businesses 10 and even 20x their revenue by them allowing me to work their business like my own. It may just be the millenial in me but I crave instant gratification and watching how conversion rates grow and studying trends in traffic after a campaign or publication satisfies that craving. I love helping other businesses realize their potential when implementing simple and effective changes in their marketing behavior. I do believe it is my calling to put money in the pockets of small business owners while they work in their passion.
