Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Mahoney.
Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got into moving while I was a student at the University of Texas. The companies I worked for left a lot to be desired—there were a lot of questionable practices in the industry, and I felt like there was an opportunity to build something better and more honest.
I started taking on small moving jobs while still in school. Early on, marketing was as scrappy as it gets—I’d go door-to-door at apartment complexes dropping off flyers and even handing out leftover tequila from a tailgate I was running at the time. When we booked jobs, I’d rent a U-Haul and recruit friends to help.
Over time, we got really good at the actual work and started building a small but loyal client base.
After graduating in 2020, my original post-grad plans were disrupted by the pandemic. That ended up being a turning point. In 2021, I officially launched Limestone Moving, and we scaled quickly by focusing on doing the job the right way. We reinvested profits into equipment, built out a strong team, and developed real relationships within the community.
Fast forward to today—we’re running 11 trucks and vans, operating across multiple locations, and have earned 5.0-star ratings on Google with over 800 combined reviews. What started as a side hustle has grown into a real, established business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
Moving is a tough, reputation-driven business, and early on we were constantly trying to keep up with demand. It’s also highly seasonal—summers and end-of-month moves are extremely busy, while winters and mid-month periods can be much slower. Managing that imbalance has always been a challenge.
Hiring and retaining great crews was one of the biggest hurdles in the beginning—and honestly, it still is. There were times when we had more work than we could handle, and other times when we didn’t have enough work to keep everyone busy.
In the early days, we took almost any job we could get. That meant moving hoarder houses, rat-infested sheds, and everything in between. There was a lot of literal blood, sweat, and tears that went into building this company.
But through all of that, we’ve consistently found ways to adapt and improve. Our team has stepped up time and time again, and that resilience has been a huge part of our growth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Limestone Moving offers local and long-distance moving, packing and unpacking, junk removal, and storage solutions.
What really sets us apart is our commitment to transparency, consistency, and service quality. We prioritize clear, upfront pricing and hire people who genuinely care about doing a great job. As a result, we’ve built a business that is almost entirely referral-based—our reputation in the community drives everything.
We’ve also had the opportunity to be involved with a wide range of local organizations and events, including charities, Texas Athletics, Austin FC, and the Austin Marathon. Being part of the Austin community is a big part of who we are.
Operationally, we’re very focused on training, systems, and team culture. We maintain a claim rate of under 1%, which is something we’re extremely proud of in an industry where damage can be common.
At the end of the day, moving is about safely transporting people’s belongings from one place to another—and we take that responsibility seriously. We’ve built a team that executes at a high level, consistently.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is being able to build something meaningful in the community I grew up in.
What started as just me with a stack of flyers has turned into a company that now supports around 50 people. Seeing the impact that has—on our team, their families, and the customers we serve—is incredibly rewarding.
We’ve always had a saying: “Limestone to the moon.” I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, but even more excited about where we’re going.
