Hidden Gems: Meet Cody & Reva Atkins of Good Old Habit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody & Reva Atkins.

Hi Cody & Reva, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started selling vintage clothing and home goods in 2015, when our living room and spare bedroom doubled as our warehouse and photo studio. In those early days, most of our sales were online but the plethora of online selling platforms did not exist yet.

Over time, we expanded into consignment at brick-and-mortar stores and became part of Austin’s thriving pop-up scene. One question that came up at pop-ups time and time again was: Where is your store? That question eventually became the spark and inspiration for something bigger.

In 2026, we found ourselves at a crossroads professionally. At the same time, we saw a clear opportunity, especially after the response we received selling on consignment and participating in street markets in the downtown Bastrop area. Everything came together and it felt like the right moment to take the next step and open a space of our own.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We always say that progress isn’t linear, and this process has certainly reinforced that. There have been challenges at almost every step: downtown space in Bastrop is hard to come by, financing required some creativity, and lease negotiations took longer than expected. On top of that, we’ve navigated personal challenges along the way that have interrupted the process, all while raising two young children whose needs come first.

Opening this store feels less like a straight path and more like a reflection of persistence. If anything, it’s a testament to our stubbornness, determination, and, perhaps most importantly, our optimism.

As you know, we’re big fans of Good Old Habit. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Good Old Habit is a vintage and secondhand designer clothing store, but we don’t limit ourselves to any one aesthetic. Our collection spans everything from Victorian to Y2K clothing, accessories, and even select home goods and jewelry.

That range of offerings has always been part of what sets us apart. We aim to offer something for everyone, including accessible price points. We don’t quite fit the mold of a boutique, with its implication of higher prices, and we’re not a traditional thrift store either: You won’t have to sift through racks of filler to find quality pieces.

Our goal is simple: to connect the right items with the right people and give them the chance to feel good by expressing themselves uniquely and carrying forward a piece of history. After all, quality vintage items like these are only getting harder to come by.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We believe you make your own luck. It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking at others’ success and attributing it to luck, while viewing your own challenges as the result of bad luck.

While it’s true we didn’t start this business with the same resources many others have, the fact that we’re able to pursue it at all, and to do so together as a family, feels incredibly fortunate.

As far as the challenges that we’ve faced just in getting our store open, some of which we’ve already mentioned, also include events like health scares and personal losses. While they can certainly feel like bad luck, or at the very least, bad timing, we’re choosing to see the experience as something that builds resilience and sets an example for our kids.

At the end of the day, we feel very lucky to have the opportunity to pursue our dreams.
