Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayne.
Hi Jayne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Austin. After college, I took a job at a leading nonprofit organization, thinking it would be temporary while I figured out which graduate program I wanted to pursue. Instead, I fell in love with nonprofit work. More than 10 years later, I’ve turned that passion into a career.
My first long-term volunteer role was at a local animal shelter while I was in high school. Now, after years of nonprofit leadership experience, I’ve come full circle by returning to animal welfare and helping support the community that first inspired my passion for helping animals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey at Texas Humane Heroes has been incredibly rewarding, but animal welfare work also comes with real challenges. Like many nonprofits, we’ve faced limited resources, growing community needs, and the constant challenge of trying to help as many animals as possible with the space, staffing, and funding available.
Animal welfare can also be emotionally heavy work because every day you’re seeing vulnerable animals in crisis and families facing difficult situations. One of the biggest lessons along the way has been learning the importance of sustainability; not just for the organization, but for the people behind the mission as well.
At the end of the day, though, every challenge reinforces why the work matters. Seeing animals get a second chance, helping families access affordable veterinary care for the pets they love, connecting adopters with a new companion, and watching the community rally around lifesaving efforts is what continues to motivate and inspire our team every day.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work at Texas Humane Heroes focuses on strengthening the connection between the organization and the community through storytelling, fundraising, outreach, and lifesaving initiatives. A big part of what we do is creating opportunities for people to become part of the mission, whether that’s through adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, or accessing affordable veterinary care for their pets.
What I’m most proud of is the impact our organization is able to make every day for vulnerable animals and the families who love them. From helping animals find safe homes to expanding community support for lifesaving programs, the work is always centered on creating long-term impact.
Few organizations take the same full-circle approach to animal welfare that Texas Humane Heroes does, rescuing vulnerable animals, connecting them with loving homes, and also providing low-cost veterinary care that helps families keep the pets they already love. That combination of compassion, community support, and long-term sustainability is what truly sets our organization apart.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons we’ve learned throughout the journey at Texas Humane Heroes is that lasting impact requires sustainability. In animal welfare, the needs are endless, and it’s easy to focus only on the immediate crisis in front of you. But to truly serve animals and the community long-term, you have to balance compassion with strategy, growth with stability, and urgency with sustainability.
Over the years, we’ve learned that caring for the people behind the mission is just as important as caring for the animals themselves. Supporting staff, volunteers, fosters, and the community creates a stronger foundation for lifesaving work. That balance is what allows organizations like ours to continue growing, evolving, and making a meaningful impact year after year.
