Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Burch.
Hi Dustin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Skyfire FX started from a lifelong passion for creating memorable experiences and turning live events into something people would never forget. Before launching Skyfire FX, I spent nearly 20 years working for a large fireworks company based out west, where I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of displays and productions. That experience gave me a deep understanding of the industry, from show design and logistics to safety, execution, and large scale event production.
After relocating to Texas, my wife Mandy and I decided to start our own company and bring the experience, knowledge, and passion I had gained over nearly two decades in the industry with us. What began as a new chapter for our family quickly grew into Skyfire FX, a pyrotechnics and special effects company focused on helping clients create high energy, memorable live experiences.
From the beginning, I was drawn to the combination of technical precision and creativity that comes with fireworks and special effects. There’s a unique challenge in designing a show that not only looks incredible, but is also executed safely and seamlessly. Over time, Skyfire FX expanded beyond traditional fireworks displays into areas like sports intros, cold spark effects, stage pyro, and custom event production for sporting events, community celebrations, corporate productions, and live entertainment.
A major part of our growth has come from building strong relationships and understanding what each client is trying to create, whether it’s a hometown celebration, a collegiate athletic intro, or a large scale professional production. We’ve always focused on being hands on, dependable, and willing to customize experiences to fit each event.
Today, Skyfire FX continues to grow by combining decades of industry experience with a commitment to innovation, safety, and customer service. At the end of the day, every show is about creating a lasting memory for the audience and helping our clients deliver something truly unforgettable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most businesses, it definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Starting over in a new state after spending nearly 20 years with an established fireworks company was both exciting and challenging. When you work for a large company, you have built in resources, infrastructure, and brand recognition behind you. Starting Skyfire FX meant building all of that from the ground up in Texas, one relationship and one event at a time.
One of the biggest challenges early on was earning trust and establishing ourselves in a competitive industry. Fireworks and special effects are very relationship driven, and clients want to know they can rely on you to deliver safely and professionally. We had to prove ourselves through hard work, consistency, and attention to detail on every event, no matter the size.
There are also a lot of moving parts behind the scenes that people never see. Logistics, licensing, insurance, weather, product availability, and safety regulations can all create challenges, especially in an industry where timing is critical and there is very little room for error. We’ve had to learn how to adapt quickly and solve problems under pressure while still delivering the experience clients expect.
Another challenge has been balancing growth while maintaining quality. As demand increased for sports intros, cold spark effects, and custom productions, we wanted to expand carefully and make sure every show still met the standards we built our reputation on. That has meant investing in equipment, training, and the right people to help continue growing the company the right way.
At the same time, those challenges are also what pushed us to improve and evolve. Every obstacle helped us become more creative, more prepared, and more focused on delivering an exceptional experience for our clients. Looking back, the difficult moments were a big part of what helped shape Skyfire FX into what it is today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Skyfire FX. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Skyfire FX is a full service pyrotechnics and special effects company focused on creating high energy, memorable live event experiences. We work with sports teams, schools, cities, venues, festivals, corporations, and event producers to bring an extra level of excitement and impact to their events through fireworks, close proximity pyro, cold spark effects, flame effects, and custom show production.
While traditional fireworks displays are still a major part of what we do, we’ve become especially known for sports intros and live event productions. From player introductions and walkouts to championship celebrations and custom cue to cue effects programming, we specialize in helping organizations create moments that energize crowds and leave a lasting impression. We love working closely with clients to build something unique for their venue or event rather than offering a one size fits all approach.
One thing that really sets Skyfire FX apart is the level of industry experience behind the company. After spending nearly 20 years working for a major fireworks company before launching Skyfire FX in Texas, I brought that large scale production experience into a more hands on, relationship driven business. Our clients work directly with people who understand both the creative and technical sides of the industry and who genuinely care about the success of the event.
We also place a huge emphasis on safety, professionalism, and reliability. In this industry, trust matters. Clients need to know that not only will the show look incredible, but that it will be executed safely, on time, and without added stress for their team. We take a lot of pride in being dependable partners and making the process smooth from planning through execution.
Brand wise, what I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built and the relationships that have come from it. A large amount of our growth has come through referrals and repeat clients, which means a lot to us because it shows that people trust both our work and our team. We’ve worked hard to build a brand that combines creativity and excitement with professionalism and attention to detail.
At the end of the day, we want people to know that Skyfire FX is about more than just fireworks. We’re in the business of creating moments. Whether it’s a packed stadium intro, a community celebration, or a once in a lifetime special event, our goal is to help create experiences people remember long after the show is over.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something a lot of people may not know is that my first real experience working in pyrotechnics was with the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics pyro team in 2002. I joined the crew just a few days after turning 18, which was the legal age required to officially work on a pyrotechnics team at the time.
For someone that age, it was an incredible experience and really opened my eyes to the scale, precision, and teamwork involved in large productions. Being around that kind of environment so early on had a huge impact on me and ultimately helped shape the career path I would follow over the next 20 plus years in the industry.
