Meet Brooke Brockman of Emerald Path Counseling PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Brockman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I suppose my story started with taking classes in college such as philosophy and sociology that made me question human behavior and why I think the way I do. After college, I worked for a local nonprofit and helped high school students who needed more individualized support in reading, writing, math, and soft skills. It was there I realized how great the need for emotional and mental support is in our community and I was inspired to go back to school to become a clinical mental health therapist.

I am so glad I chose the program at Texas State. I learned so much, received wonderful support, and met so many amazing people. I had the opportunity to intern at a few different places working with various populations, ages, and presenting issues. During much of my training, I worked with people who were survivors of crime or had experienced trauma. I learned how the brain can compartmentalize trauma to protect us in many ways. I am fascinated with the human brain and always want to gain more understanding and skills to best support my clients. That is why I am consistent in attending consultation groups, book clubs, and trainings. This is also why I am pursuing becoming fully EMDR certified. I have experienced the incredible relief EMDR can provide.

After graduation from my master’s program, I was hired at Integral Care, Austin’s Local Mental Health Authority, where I worked in Child and Family Services offering support to kids 3-17 years and their families. I earned my hours for full licensure there and was able to participate in many enriching trainings, including EMDR basic training, and meet more awesome therapists. I also met many kids with ADHD and realized I probably have it too. I was tested, and sure enough!

In April of 2023, I left Integral Care to start my own private practice called Emerald Path Counseling PLLC, where I specialize in trauma and ADHD. I have since become an ADHD – Certified Clinical Services Provider and am passionate about working with ADHD clients to help them understand and manage their ADHD, and when applicable, to unpack the impact of years of being undiagnosed. Research shows that ADHD and trauma go hand in hand. It is important to me to be able to support my clients with trauma through an ADHD informed lens.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I chose the program I did because it was important to me that it was CACREP accredited and in person. When the pandemic came around, I was halfway through the program. I almost thought of pausing so that I could resume when we could meet in person again, but attending classes gave me a sense of stability and purpose that was greatly needed at that time, so I am happy to say I continued. Turns out, I would have been waiting way longer than I thought!

Another challenge of going to school to become a therapist is the fact that you have to put yourself under a microscope. It makes sense, but it was not easy doing my own internal work while also working and going to school full time.

Also, beginning my own private practice felt like climbing a mountain, but I kept taking one step at a time and I was not alone. I truly appreciate all the private practice therapists who let me pick their brains along the way!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Emerald Path Counseling PLLC?
I offer virtual EMDR and talk therapy to individuals ages 14 and up who reside in Texas. I specialize in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Many of the clients I work well with are struggling in relationships, work, or school due to anxiety, depressive symptoms, difficulties with time management and organization, procrastination, or trouble focusing. Often they feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck.

I provide a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients can openly process their experiences while also gaining psychoeducation, coping skills, and practical tools for greater understanding and support. My combination of EMDR and ADHD expertise allows me to offer a unique approach that sets me apart from many other EMDR therapists.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t know that I can pick just one. I have many fond memories of being outside as a kid. I grew up with 4 siblings and there were many other kids in the neighborhood. We were always outside playing in sprinklers, playing kickball or tag, and climbing trees and roofs. There was no shortage of playmates. I still love being outside as much as possible!
