Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Sloan.
Hi Katy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Katy Sloan, or @Not_Katy_Sloan on Instagram. My username was created in a rebellious fashion while teaching elementary Art in Western NY. I always had a public flare that pushed my own boundaries (and the boundaries of my profession)… the most practical thing to do was to hide my identity in a poetic and passive-aggressive way. I became Not_Katy_Sloan.
Soon after I became Not, I left the traditional teaching profession to indulge in my soul. I said goodbye to my hometown of Buffalo, NY, embarked on a solo roadtrip to LA by way of Miami, and became a professional artist. Love brought me to Denver, Colorado.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My obstacles seem to begin and end within myself. Before I first visited Denver to see a longtime friend and local artist who goes by Eucalypschitz, and before I met Caleb Brown- a Metal musician who was interviewed by Voyage Denver the same week we fell in love… I was in Los Angeles lying in bed. I had so much within me; it was untapped talent that I knew existed, but I wasn’t ready to publicly share. Or I was sharing it publicly, but didn’t have the audience to amplify my effort.
Like any sane wild woman would do, I stayed in bed and meditated on my mental blocks. It was a process of exploring my soul in bed, getting out to the beach, publishing podcasts and Instagram content, adventuring in greater LA, making friends, and resting some more. My meditative technique involves finding the blocks within my mind and body. They can be physical sensations, patterns of avoidance, or negative emotion associated with my goal. Once I have it at my metaphysical fingertips, I observe the feeling with love. Healing takes place in my everyday life over the following days, weeks, months, and years.
Since moving to Denver, I have honed my singing skills with help from my Metal singing boyfriend and Kareoke nights (That’s Kava on Wednesday night, Tavern on 26, and Park Center Lounge). I expanded my proFASHIONal wardrobe on a budget with Kits Boutique, and fostered an Instagram following through almost-daily fashion and dance content. I currently have an audience of 4,700 followers on Instagram and am blessed to watch it grow every day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My art is wild, free, and so so human. I dance with my soul, press record, then post a reel that feels divine. I take poetic photos that capture my mood and make a cryptic series with the caption “lately…”… But the thing that gained the bulk of my followers was completely unexpected.
I found myself on 38th and Chestnut pl. at the old River Bar’s open mic. After some debate, I signed up. With no musical accompaniment, I chose to sing my favorite song acapella… the song Agora Hills by Doja Cat. The DJ asked “no track?…???” I nodded my head, gave my phone to Caleb to record, kicked off my shoes, tied my shirt up snatched, and proceeded to sing Doja Cat with all my heart.
I retrieved my phone from Caleb, posted the video to Instagram, and received 270k views. Now, I know I can get more views than that. I have chased virality ever since.
I lean on a blend of improvisation, honesty, fun, and mystery to keep my content fresh and captivating.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Fun makes me happy! People always say “Chase your dreams!”, “Do what you love!”. When I ask myself what that consists of, I usually answer “Have fun, baby girl!”
