Life & Work with Vicki of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki.

Hi Vicki, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My career started in fashion, my degree was Fashion Merchandising. After college, I went to work for Parisian as a cosmetics buyer for 21 stores. That led me to Estée Lauder, where I became an account executive for 10 years. I had 2 small boys, and decided to stay home and raise them at the age of 40. I had always had an interest in art, when my boys were a little older, I was able to pursue my dream of becoming an artist. I started with art classes from numerous artists that I admired, & learned something valuable from each of them. I was able to take what I learned from very different artists & make it my own. I found that I loved creating & feel that after 25 years, I still evolve & get better every time I paint.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggles were the rejections from applying to certain shows or galleries. A lot of the shows want you to apply with a body of work that will present a cohesive booth, I’m not that artist. I have several bodies of work, & they all sell, so it was very hard for me to pick one.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in painting large, I love to work with designers & to be the focal point of the room. My passion is abstract, but I also love painting landscapes, florals, & figurative. For the last 2 years I’ve been at The Arbors in Round Top, Tx. It’s a fabulous antique show every March & October that lasts for 2 weeks. I started painting cowgirls for Tx., but have found that I’m selling them & shipping them everywhere! What sets me apart from other artists, is my ability to paint such different bodies of work. This is why I have a great repeat business. My clients can buy several pieces from me & it doesn’t look like the same artist.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I also do the Scott Antique Market in Atlanta the 2nd weekend of every month. There I have met designers & retailers from all over. I enjoy following my favorite designers & continuing to create pieces that their clients are happy to have in their homes, that’s so rewarding for me.
