Today we’d like to introduce you to Theadore Dicus.
Hi Theadore, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Los Angeles but raised with strong Texas roots after my family relocated to Houston in my pre-teens. Thanks to Grandpa Andy, my mother Diane and caring mentors, such as Gordon Whitworth, Ron Peat and Patrick Laurini, I learned the value of hard work, resilience and creating opportunities for yourself. I am 100% confident, it is because of these mentors, life has been more fulfilling, positive and why I am so insistent on giving back.
In my early 20’s, while working as a manager in the hospitality industry, I desired what many young families dream about, owning my own home and building a better future for my family. While working my full-time job in the hotel, I started a side company doing landscaping and home repairs, saving every extra dollar toward the down payment on my first duplex.
That first investment property sparked a passion for real estate, construction, and entrepreneurship that eventually led me into remodeling homes, building custom homes and purchasing investment properties throughout Central Texas. Additionally, I’ve pursued several entrepreneurial ventures that taught me about both success and setbacks.
A near-death experience in my early 20’s provided me with a very different perspective on life. The most important being, not to take time, people, or opportunities for granted. It also reinforced the importance of slowing down to breathe, have a life work balance and always continue to learn new things.
In addition to real estate and investing, I serve as Vice President, and a firefighter, for the Sandy Harbor Volunteer Fire Department. Staying involved through volunteering and mentorship helps keep me grounded and reminds me what matters most, my family, friendships, community, and the impact we leave on others.
At the end of the day, I believe success is less about accomplishments and more about relationships, helping people, and creating something meaningful through the experiences we’re given, and giving back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Like most people trying to build a life, a business, and support a family, there were a lot of challenges along the way.
I’ve experienced economic ups and downs, industry changes, labor shortages, rising construction costs, and the increasing difficulty many families face trying to afford land and home ownership in Central Texas. Working within large corporate environments at times also taught me that success is not always just about effort, but about learning how to adapt, communicate, and navigate through difficult situations.
Entrepreneurship itself comes with constant uncertainty, however that uncertainty is often a positive driving factor. Some ventures and investments worked out very well while others taught hard lessons, especially during the 2008 recession. We are still experiencing a continued struggling economy post COVID 19, where many businesses and families are forced to regroup and rebuild. These experiences definitely shaped me both personally and professionally.
Life is about experiences and it has its way of providing us with constant learning opportunities. It reminds you from time to time that setbacks, stress, and challenges are all temporary and that you must choose to keep moving forward. Besides, what fun would it be if we knew what we know when we didn’t?
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Theadore Dicus, Luxury Realty?
At Theadore Dicus Luxury Realty, what really sets our approach apart is that I understand real estate well beyond the transactional side. I understand homes, construction, remodeling, investing, and the emotional side of what buying or selling property means for people and families.
Over the years, I’ve built custom homes, remodeled homes, such as flood or fire victims, from the foundation and/or studs up, personally own investment properties, and worked with domestic and international clients across a variety of real estate situations. That hands-on experience allows me to help people look beyond surface-level details and better understand long-term value, potential concerns, lifestyle fit, and investment opportunities.
Today, my primary focus is the Texas Hill Country and Lake LBJ area, which is a market and lifestyle I genuinely enjoy myself. Because I live on the lake and in the Hill Country lifestyle, I truly understand what draws people to this area and the unique opportunities and challenges that come with it, whether someone is searching for a family home, a weekend lake property, investment opportunity, or future retirement retreat.
I think one of the things clients appreciate most is that I try to keep the experience real, honest, and relationship focused. I never want people to feel pressured or treated like just another transaction. Buying or selling property is often one of the biggest decisions people make, and I believe trust, communication, and education are incredibly important throughout that process.
Brand wise, I’m probably most proud of building a reputation centered around authenticity, hard work, and genuinely caring about people. Whether through real estate, investing, volunteering, or serving as Vice President and firefighter for the Sandy Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, my goal has always been to build meaningful relationships and make a positive impact where I can.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that Theadore Dicus, Luxury Realty is built around helping others make informed decisions, protecting their interests, and creating long-term relationships, not simply closing deals.
How do you think about luck?
I think luck plays a role in everyone’s life in one way or another, but I’ve learned that what really matters is how you respond to both the good and the bad moments.
I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors, supportive relationships, and opportunities come into my life at important times. At the same time, I’ve also experienced difficult seasons, economic downturns, business setbacks, and personal challenges that forced me to adapt, rebuild, and grow.
One experience that changed my perspective early in life was surviving a near-death medical situation in my early 20’s. Moments like that have a way of making you appreciate life, relationships, and time differently. It reminded me very quickly that none of us are promised tomorrow and that success means very little if you lose sight of the people and experiences that truly matter.
I often have to learn the hard way, and that’s ok. In business, I think some people view setbacks as bad luck, but often those moments have been my greatest teachers. Some of the hardest periods of my life ended up shaping my character, strengthening my resilience, and helping me develop empathy and perspective that I probably wouldn’t have gained otherwise.
Looking back, I feel less focused on luck itself and more grateful for the people, lessons, and opportunities that helped shape who I am today. I believe staying humble, continuing to learn, treating people well, and keeping perspective through both successes and struggles has probably mattered more than luck ever did.
My Grandfather was my hero. He also had a somewhat of an engineering, construction and sales mindset. From early on, and on several occasions, he would say to me, “Teddy, always treat people right, do the right thing and always be selling, and the money, well it will follow.”
