Meet Gracy McGuigan of Pup Confections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracy McGuigan.

Hi Gracy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Houston, Texas, and looking back, Pup Confections feels like the natural result of everything I’ve loved my entire life: dogs, baking, and design.

I grew up in a creative household with a mom who was a bilingual educator and a dad who was a mechanical engineer, so I was always surrounded by both imagination and problem-solving. I loved the arts early on, from dance and crafts to drawing, baking, and eventually graphic design. That creative path led me to earn my bachelor’s degree in graphic design and dance from Sam Houston State University, and later my master’s degree in graphic design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

My design career has taken me all over the country. I started in New York at Martha Stewart Living, then moved into advertising, working on brands like HP, Pepsi, Reebok, and Starbucks. From there, I joined the NFL, where I designed for major events including the London Games, Pro Bowl, and Super Bowl. Later, I moved into tech and retail, working on Amazon Go, Twitter, Rakuten, and DataRobot. I loved the pace, the creativity, and the opportunity to build visual experiences for major brands.

But after the pandemic, my husband and I decided to move back to Texas to be closer to family. About a year later, I was laid off from my tech role, and for the first time in a long time, I had to pause and ask myself what I really wanted to build next.

That answer came from a very personal place.

Years ago, my husband and I had a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Pixel, a little nod to our graphic design background. He was our first fur baby, and we were very intentional about giving him the healthiest food and treats we could. Sadly, we lost him to brain cancer when he was only 6.5 years old. That loss changed the way I looked at what we give our dogs and how much trust we place in the products we bring into our homes.

When we later welcomed our dogs Cookie and Churro into our lives, I started baking treats myself so I could control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary fillers, preservatives, and artificial additives. What began as something I made out of love for my own dogs slowly turned into something bigger.

That’s how Pup Confections was born.

I combined my background in design, my love for baking, and my deep dog-mom energy into a brand that creates small-batch, baked-to-order dog treats made with simple, human-grade ingredients. I spent months developing the recipes, building the brand, designing the packaging, and getting the proper licenses and certifications in place. On December 1, 2024, I officially launched Pup Confections.

Today, Pup Confections is more than a dog treat company to me. It started as a love letter to the dogs who changed my life, and now it’s my way of helping other dog parents celebrate the pups who make every ordinary day feel a little more special. Every treat, every package, and every seasonal collection is made with that same heart: thoughtful, wholesome, and full of love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a completely smooth road, but I think that’s true for most small business owners. Pup Confections may look sweet and polished on the outside, but behind the scenes, there has been a lot of learning, problem-solving, and figuring things out as I go.

One of the biggest surprises was realizing how much goes into starting a dog treat business beyond creating recipes and cute packaging. I had to learn about licensing, food regulations, ingredient sourcing, production, shelf life, labeling, markets, shipping, and all the little details that no one really sees. I quickly learned that passion gets you started, but patience and persistence are what keep you going.

One of the hardest lessons was finding out that I could not simply sell my treats nationwide right away. Each state has its own rules and licensing requirements, which can be complicated and costly for a small business. For now, Pup Confections can only sell within Texas. That has been tough because I have family, friends, and dog lovers in other states who want to support the business, and it is hard to say, “Not yet.”

Balancing everything has also been a challenge. I am still building a customer base, showing up at markets, creating seasonal products, handling social media, baking, packaging, and managing the business side, all while making time for my husband and our dogs. Some days feel exciting and full of momentum. Other days feel like I am learning five new jobs at once.

But even with the challenges, I would not trade it. Every happy customer, every repeat order, and every pup who gets excited over one of my treats reminds me why I started. Pup Confections has taught me that building something from scratch is not always easy, but when it is rooted in love, it is always worth it.

We’ve been impressed with Pup Confections, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pup Confections is a small-batch dog treat bakery based in Leander, Texas, created for dog parents who want treats that feel just as special as the dogs they love.

We specialize in baked-to-order dog treats made with simple, human-grade ingredients and no fillers, preservatives, or artificial additives. Our treats are made for everyday spoiling, gifting, birthdays, holidays, markets, and all the little “just because” moments that come with loving a dog.

What we’re becoming known for is our playful, giftable approach to dog treats. From our signature Texas-shaped Woofles to our Peanut Butter Bark Bites, Cheddar Canine Crunchies, and seasonal treat boxes, everything is designed to feel thoughtful, fun, and a little extra in the best way. I like to think of Pup Confections as the place where wholesome dog treats meet beautiful packaging.

My background as a graphic designer plays a huge role in the brand. I care just as much about how the treats are made as I do about how they are presented. Every bag, tag, box, ribbon, and seasonal collection is created with intention. I want customers to feel like they are picking up something special, whether it is for their own pup, a friend’s dog, or a local market gift.

What sets Pup Confections apart is the heart behind it. These are not mass-produced treats sitting on a warehouse shelf. They are small-batch, baked-to-order, and inspired by my own dogs, Cookie and Churro, who are also our official taste testers. As a dog mom, I know how much trust goes into choosing products for your pets, so I take that responsibility seriously.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that Pup Confections feels joyful, polished, and personal all at once. It reflects who I am as a designer, baker, and dog lover. I wanted to build a brand that made people smile before they even opened the package, then made their dogs even happier once they tasted what was inside.

More than anything, I want people to know that Pup Confections was built out of love. It is for the dogs who greet us like celebrities when we walk through the door, who sit patiently for a treat, who make hard days softer, and who turn ordinary moments into something worth celebrating. Our goal is simple: to help dog parents spoil their pups with treats that are wholesome, beautifully made, and full of heart.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would love for readers to know that Pup Confections was created for dog parents who see their pups as family.

Our treats are small-batch, baked-to-order, and made with simple, human-grade ingredients, but what makes them special is the feeling behind them. They are designed for the little moments that make being a dog parent so joyful: the tail wags, the happy dances, the birthday celebrations, the holiday gifts, and the “just because I love you” treats.

Every order supports a small, woman-owned Texas business, but it also supports a brand built on love, creativity, and the belief that dogs deserve treats that feel just as special as they make us feel.

So whether you visit us at a local market, order for your own pup, or gift a box to another dog lover, I hope Pup Confections brings a little more joy to your day and a lot more excitement to your pup’s. You can shop our treats, explore seasonal collections, and follow along with upcoming markets at pupconfections.com.
