Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Fontenette-Mitchell.
Hi Melissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey as an artist began with a passion for photography and storytelling. I have always been drawn to capturing meaningful moments, people, and places that reflect the beauty, history. Over the years, that passion evolved into a fine art practice that combines photography, digital art, and mixed media to explore themes of culture, identity, history, and social impact.
As a graduate of Texas Southern University, I have been fortunate to exhibit my work in galleries, museums, libraries, and public spaces throughout Texas and beyond. My artwork has been featured in collections and exhibitions that celebrate both artistic excellence and community engagements.
I continue to create work that inspires dialogue, honors untold stories, and celebrates the richness of human experience. Whether through public art, exhibitions, or community projects, my goal is to create meaningful connections and leave a lasting impact through visual storytelling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been an easy path. Trusting the Lord through the challenges and hurdles to overcome has been a journey in itself. Like most artists, one of the biggest challenges for me has been balancing creativity with the practical demands of work, family, and building a sustainable career. There were times when opportunities seemed limited, and I had to trust and learn how to advocate for myself, apply for exhibitions and public art projects, and remain confident in my vision even when faced with rejection.
Another challenge has been creating work that impacts the lives addresses meaningful subjects while also finding the right platforms and audiences to engage with those conversations. Success in the arts often requires persistence, patience, and resilience.
At the same time, those challenges have helped shape who I am as an artist. They have taught me the importance of faith, perseverance, continuous learning, and community. Every obstacle has strengthened my commitment to using art as a tool for storytelling, inspiration, and positive change. Looking back, the struggles were not setbacks—they were opportunities for growth that helped me become the artist I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a fine art photographer and visual storyteller whose work celebrates culture, history, community, and the beauty of everyday life. Through fine art photography art, I create vibrant, layered images that inspire connection, reflection, and conversation.
I specialize in storytelling through visual art, blending creativity with meaningful narratives that honor heritage, resilience, and the human experience. My work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, Austin Villager Newspaper, public spaces, and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Austin People’s Gallery, Texas State University, Neiman Marcus, and the Texas House of Representatives. One of my photographs was also featured on Oprah.com.
What I am most proud of is creating art that connects people and preserves important stories. What sets me apart is my ability to combine artistic vision with purpose, creating work that is both visually compelling and deeply meaningful.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Several resources help me do my best both creatively and personally. Adobe Photoshop is an essential tool in my artistic practice, allowing me to bring my creative vision to life. I also enjoy reading personal growth and self-development books that challenge me to keep learning and growing.
On a daily basis, I spend time with devotionals that help me stay grounded in my faith and focused on what matters most. I also listen to podcasts centered on living with purpose, leadership, and making a positive impact in the community. Together, these resources help me stay inspired, creative, and intentional in both my work and everyday life.
