Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Boriskin.
Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Texas from California 20 years ago. I always loved cooking, especially Italian food since my wife’s family is Italian, but about 5 years after moving here, I told myself I had to figure out this smoking thing! A couple buddies and I started messing around with bbq on the weekends, and about a year later we joined the Lone Star BBQ Society, and were doing competitions! My wife had to inform me what Instagram and a hashtag were, and all of a sudden we started getting followers and sponsors. After 10 years competing (and Covid) I stopped competing but remain close with many of the BBQ spots and restaurants around Austin. And of course still cook plenty for my friends and family. My primary goal now is helping shine the spotlight on amazing chefs and restaurants around Austin, and continuing to try new things and make delicious food at home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The competitions were not easy to navigate. Getting the timing down for turn ins, took the first year to really figure out. And everyone likes something different, either on the circuit or in the backyard. Ultimately, I decided just to cook things how I like it and see where the chips fall.
For restaurants, I have so much appreciation for the industry. The service, time and dedication it takes to be consistently excellent is so difficult. I love to send friends to my favorite restaurants and give support to local spots.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve actually worked in banking my entire career. I work as a Private Bank relationship manager, and have formed relationships with my clients over the past 2 decades. My strength is really doing what’s best for others, understanding who they are, what their family needs and what makes them tick. I love my job because to me is doesn’t feel like work, I just get to help people that feel like family.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is making others around you better, and sharing happiness through experiences. Whether that be helping with finances or bringing a smile with food.
