Conversations with Lisa Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Allen.

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well…I’m originally from Kansas and have always loved DIY. I started my career as a hair stylist, which is where I first learned to really see people. I loved getting to know my clients and learning what they wanted, creating a vision into something tangible, and the satisfaction of a complete transformation. That creative instinct eventually led me to painting murals, and something just clicked. But honestly, it didn’t stop there. I’ve had the opportunity to craft accent walls with woodworking, transform fireplaces, tiptoe into the plaster industry, and serve on Art Committees and I love every bit of it. That’s what the art world does: it keeps opening new doors. When I moved to Austin in 2008, I didn’t know I would I build a life as a mom of 3 and business owner in Southwest Austin! It grew from what started as a paintbrush and a vision into a full creative operation. And I have also joined a community with a nationwide network of artists that lets me bring large-scale murals to residential and commercial spaces far beyond Texas. At the core of it all, the mission has stayed the same since my hair salon days: transform a space and you transform how people feel in it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yes and no. Always learning! I think the hardest part to navigate is to think like a business owner while staying connected to the art and reminding myself why I started. When you’re passionate about creating, the administrative and logistical side of running a company can feel like it’s pulling you away from what you love. But I’ve come to see it differently. Building systems, managing a team, communicating with clients is all part of making the art possible at a bigger scale. The challenge made me better at both.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom, hand-painted murals that transform ordinary spaces into meaningful experiences. My work focuses on residential interiors and exteriors, children’s rooms, feature walls, commercial spaces, and community-driven projects. I love creating immersive environments that blend storytelling, color, and design while reflecting the personality of the people who use the space. Whether it’s a calming retreat, a playful kids’ room, or a statement piece for a business, I create artwork that feels intentional, timeless, and unique to each client.
A proud moment for me when I was designing a space, I was asked, “Do you want it to look like a boutique hotel or a child’s room.?” And my answer was “Both!” Why can’t we live in homes that feel and look like a boutique hotel?
What sets me apart isn’t just the painting, it’s the experience. With over 15 years in the beauty industry, I learned how to listen closely to clients, understand their vision, and create something that feels personal. I bring that same approach to every mural, blending artistic skill with thoughtful design to create spaces that tell a story. Rather than following trends, I focus on creating artwork that feels authentic to the people who live, work, and gather there. Every project is custom, collaborative, and designed to turn blank walls into something transformative.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Hmmm… I think I was a pretty typical kid…..curious, adventurous, and always wanting to try something new. I could be a little shy around adults, but once I found my group of friends, I never stopped talking! Haha! I loved roller coasters, haunted houses, and anything that felt like an adventure. I was always looking for ways to be social, whether that meant spending time with friends, convincing my parents to let me travel to Europe with the school band, or staying busy with sports like basketball, soccer, softball, and tennis. Looking back, I think I’ve always been someone who wanted to experience as much of life as possible.
