Today we’d like to introduce you to Spank Communication.
Hi Spank, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Spank Communication is an Austin-based rock band. We blend fusion and indie sounds, leaving space to arrive on euphoric jams. Spank Communication is: Casey Cunningham on guitar and vocals, Alex Canterbury on keyboards and vocals, Dawson Steele on bass and vocals, and Braeden Shoyer on drums. Alex and Casey met nearly two years ago and quickly recognized a shared passion. While Casey grew up in Austin, he’d been away for a while. Alex pulled into town with a clear goal: continue tickling those sweet, sweet ivories with a like-minded group of individuals. Both had just departed their former groups in their former places of living, and both wanted to bite off what Austin had to offer. Diving headfirst into the scene, they attended countless shows to seek a complete outfit for a band. That’s how they ran into Dawson. All three made an immediate connection at a Grateful Dead cover band show. In our year-plus as a gigging group, Spank has been honored to share the stage with a few talented drummers, but none as fearless as Braeden, a Performance student in Texas State’s Jazz program. We’ve solidified this core lineup for the last 6 months. We take influences from the rich voice of The Band, jam legends Phish, the prance of Herbie Hancock records, and the grit of indie artists like MJ Lenderman – amongst anything and everything we’re taking in live on a weekly basis. We’re gigging, pumping out original music, and molding what it means to be in your early 20s in the live music capital of the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s a lot of competition here. You can walk into any club in town and catch some of the baddest players in the world. We find it tough not to spend all shmeckles on absorbing those live sounds. On one hand, this aggregate defines our sound. On the other hand, we struggle to get air time. Managing four schedules who pursue this project in combination with full-time work and school isn’t easy, but we’re gigging in any way we can.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
3. We want to play! Hire us, endorse us, complain about us to your neighbors – anything to fuel the buzz that will continue to catapult us up on stages across central Texas. We have a new single coming out this summer titled “Microeconomics,” and we have a bank of original material we’re just sitting on like fat cats. Come see us! We might play some songs you have heard of, but I’ll bet you’ve never heard them the way we do it. Two words: sonic excellence. Follow us on Instagram @spank_communication to be in the know.
