Today we’d like to introduce you to Susy Ovalle.
Hi Susy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been shaped largely by my volunteer work as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. For many years, I’ve dedicated time to wherever there was a need, which has given me opportunities to grow personally, develop valuable skills, and connect with people from different backgrounds.
In 2025, that volunteer work led me to Laredo, Texas. Moving there was a meaningful experience that allowed me to continue serving others while building new relationships and becoming part of a vibrant community. Through these experiences, I’ve learned the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and putting people first.
Along the way, I’ve also pursued my passion for photography, using it as a way to tell stories, preserve meaningful moments, and connect with people on a deeper level. Today, I combine the lessons I’ve gained through volunteer service with my creative work, focusing on capturing authentic moments and creating lasting memories for others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many people, I’ve faced challenges and periods of uncertainty along the way. One of the biggest adjustments was being willing to step outside of my comfort zone and relocate when opportunities for volunteer service arose. Leaving behind familiar surroundings, building a new network, and adapting to different environments required a lot of faith, resilience, and flexibility.
Starting over in a new place isn’t always easy, but it helped me grow personally and professionally.
Another challenge has been building my photography business while balancing other responsibilities. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve had to learn through trial and error, stay consistent during slower seasons, and trust the process. Looking back, those struggles helped shape who I am today. They’ve taught me perseverance, patience, and the importance of staying focused on what truly matters.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer who specializes in capturing authentic, meaningful moments that reflect who people truly are. Whether it’s couples, engagements, weddings, portraits, or travel sessions, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel natural, timeless, and genuine.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the feedback I receive from clients who tell me they normally hate being in front of a camera or consider themselves shy and awkward in photos. Hearing someone say, “You made me feel comfortable,” or “I’ve never felt this confident in front of a camera before,” means more to me than any technical compliment. I believe photography is as much about building trust and creating a relaxed experience as it is about taking beautiful photos.
What sets me apart is my focus on connection. I take the time to get to know my clients, help them feel at ease, and create an environment where they can simply be themselves. When people feel comfortable, their personalities shine through, and that’s where the magic happens.
I’m also incredibly grateful for the opportunities my volunteer work as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses has brought into my life. Through the international friendships and family I’ve built over the years, I’ve connected with people from all over the world. In fact, those relationships have now led to one of the most exciting milestones of my career: being contracted to photograph a wedding in Tuscany, Italy. For many photographers, that’s a dream opportunity, and it’s something I’m truly honored and excited to be a part of!
More than anything, I’m proud that my work allows me to preserve some of life’s most meaningful authentic moments while helping people see themselves with confidence and joy.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best is the people. Since moving here in 2025, I’ve experienced a strong sense of community, hospitality, and family values. People are welcoming, supportive, and genuinely care about one another. I also appreciate the city’s rich culture and the way it blends traditions from both sides of the border. It’s a unique place with a strong identity, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the community through both my volunteer work and photography.
If I had to choose something I like least, it would probably be the summer heat. As beautiful as South Texas is, the temperatures can be intense, especially when you’re spending long hours outdoors photographing sessions or attending community events. That said, it’s a small trade-off for everything else the city has to offer.
Overall, it has been a wonderful place for me to grow, build relationships, and continue pursuing both my volunteer service and photography career.
