Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Mowery.
Hi Diane, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved art since I was young, but like many people, I set it aside for a period of time while focusing on work and other responsibilities. About fourteen years ago, a friend invited me to take a local art class, and that experience rekindled my love for painting.
From that point on, art became a consistent part of my life. I worked at Painting with a Twist, later taught through Cordovan Art School and private classes, and continued studying and exploring different mediums. I eventually completed the Milan Art Institute program online, which helped me grow both technically and professionally as an artist.
I first became aware of live wedding painting more than ten years ago and was immediately intrigued by the idea. At the time, however, there were very few artists offering the service, and it felt like a distant goal. Years later, I discovered Stephanie Gaffney’s Wedding Painter Blueprint program and decided to invest in specialized training. Her program provided invaluable guidance not only in live wedding painting, but also in serving clients and building a successful business.
Looking back, I can see how all of those experiences connected. At the time, I was just trying to learn, improve, and find my place as an artist. Each step taught me something different, and together they eventually led me to where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was learning that being an artist and running an art business require different skill sets.
Creating art came naturally to me, but marketing, pricing, building a website, social media, and finding clients were all things I had to learn along the way. There were also times when I questioned whether I was pursuing the right path or whether I should focus on one medium, one style, or one business model.
Another challenge was learning to trust my own voice as an artist. It’s easy to compare yourself to others or feel like you need to follow someone else’s formula for success. Over time, I’ve learned that growth comes from continuing to learn while also staying true to what excites and inspires me.
Another challenge has been that art is often a very solitary profession. Many creative businesses require support, whether that’s help with events, setup and breakdown, logistics, or administrative tasks. As a solo business owner, I’ve worn many hats over the years and have often had to figure things out myself.
Learning when to ask for help, when to collaborate, and how to build relationships with other artists and professionals has been an important part of my growth. While creating artwork may happen independently, building a successful creative business is rarely something that happens entirely alone.
The challenges haven’t disappeared, but I’ve become much more comfortable embracing the process and allowing my business to evolve as I do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Love Story Live Painting ?
Love Story Live Painting specializes in live wedding paintings and watercolor guest portraits created during wedding celebrations and special events.
The name Love Story Live Painting reflects what matters most to me. Every couple has a unique story, and I believe their artwork should reflect that. My goal is not simply to paint what a wedding looked like, but to create a piece that captures what made that day meaningful to them.
What sets my work apart is the amount of time I spend getting to know my clients before I ever pick up a brush. I want to understand not only their love story, but also how they envision their painting. Some couples want the artwork to focus on the energy and atmosphere of the celebration, while others want something more intimate and centered on their connection with one another. Those choices influence everything from the composition and lighting to the mood and level of detail.
I also take into consideration how the artwork will live beyond the wedding day. I often discuss where the painting will hang, the style of their home, and the overall feeling they want to experience when they look at it years from now. My goal is to create a piece that feels personal to them rather than a one-size-fits-all wedding painting.
More than anything, I want each painting to tell a story that is uniquely theirs. Every love story is different, and it is a privilege to preserve those memories in a way that can be enjoyed for generations.
What’s next?
My future plans are focused on continued growth, both as an artist and as a business owner. I believe there is always more to learn, and I am committed to continually refining my skills so I can create the best possible experience for my clients.
While live wedding painting will always be at the heart of my business, I am especially excited about expanding into live guest sketching and portrait experiences for a wider variety of events. One of the things I love most is seeing the excitement people feel when they receive a custom piece of artwork created just for them. Guest sketching allows me to share that experience with many people throughout an event, whether it’s a wedding, corporate gathering, fundraiser, or special celebration.
Most importantly, I want to continue creating meaningful artwork, providing exceptional service, and helping people celebrate life’s special moments through art.
