Life & Work with Yvette Strange of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Strange.

Hi Yvette, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Spoon Mountain Glamping was born from a dream my husband, Ken, and I shared of creating a place where people could slow down, unplug from the distractions of everyday life, and reconnect with the people they love most. We have always been passionate about serving others and creating meaningful experiences, and we wanted to build something that reflected those values.

For over a decade, we have owned The Med Spa in Wimberley, where my focus has been helping people relax, recharge, and care for themselves. Through that experience, I learned how powerful it can be when people intentionally step away from their busy lives and prioritize wellness and connection. That philosophy became the foundation for Spoon Mountain Glamping.

At the same time, Ken dedicated 30 years of his life to serving our community through Wimberley EMS. Throughout his career, he witnessed firsthand how stressful and demanding life can be. Together, we wanted to create a destination where people could escape those pressures, even if only for a few days, and focus on what matters most.

After several years of planning, permitting, and construction, we opened Spoon Mountain Glamping in April 2021. We chose authentic African safari tents handcrafted in Ladysmith, South Africa, because they offered the perfect blend of adventure, luxury, and connection to nature. From the beginning, our goal was to create more than just a place to stay—we wanted to create an experience that guests would remember long after they returned home.

Today, Spoon Mountain Glamping features three luxury safari tents overlooking the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country. We cater exclusively to couples and often joke that “babies are made here—they don’t stay here.” Each tent offers a private retreat complete with a king-size bed dressed in luxury linens, a kitchenette, sitting area, walk-in tiled shower, climate control for year-round comfort, a private plunge pool, outdoor soaking tub, and Blackstone griddle on the back deck.

One of the most intentional decisions we made was not to include televisions. In a world where everyone is constantly connected to screens, we wanted to encourage couples to reconnect with each other instead. Guests spend their time enjoying the views, soaking in the tub, floating in the pool, playing games, reading, exploring Wimberley, and simply slowing down together.

In addition to the private accommodations, guests can enjoy our shared gathering space known as the Boma, inspired by traditional African gathering areas where people come together to relax and connect. We also created a dedicated spa tent where couples can enjoy side-by-side massages and facials. Guests can extend their spa experience by relaxing in the hot tub, unwinding in the infrared sauna, or taking a refreshing shower after their treatment.

Although guests feel completely immersed in nature, Spoon Mountain Glamping is conveniently located less than half a mile from downtown Wimberley and Blue Hole. This unique location allows visitors to enjoy the peaceful seclusion of the Hill Country while remaining close to the restaurants, shops, and attractions that make Wimberley such a special destination.

What started as a dream has grown into a place where couples come to celebrate anniversaries, engagements, birthdays, babymoons, and much-needed getaways. The greatest reward is hearing guests tell us that they left feeling more connected, refreshed, and present than when they arrived. Creating those experiences is exactly why we started Spoon Mountain Glamping, and it continues to inspire us every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are located within city limits and zoned neighborhood services, so we had to go to city council and explain our concept and get them to trust that our resort was going to be high end and not just a tent from academy. we built during covid and that certainly was a challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Between my husband and myself I am the more entrepreneurial one, more of the dreamer and risk taker , Ken is a little more reserved when it comes to these things but he jumps right in trusting my intuition and so far we have been very successful. Diving into the unique experiential Vacation rental business was something we had never really thought of but it turns out we both love serving others and we didnt know how much we like hospitality business

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
