Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Bellz.
Hi Melissa , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my DJ journey in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2015 with a passion for music and a desire to bring people together. I taught myself how to DJ, invested in my craft, and began taking every opportunity I could to perform. As my career grew, I eventually relocated to Austin, Texas, where I built my business and expanded into weddings, corporate events, festivals, and community celebrations.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of DJing for brands like Apple, serving as an official SXSW DJ, and working with organizations and clients who trust me to help create unforgettable experiences. I’m grateful for how far the journey has taken me, and I’m excited for what’s next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve had to navigate slow seasons, financial uncertainty, and the challenge of building a business from the ground up without a blueprint. Moving from Cleveland to Austin meant starting over and building a new network from scratch. There were moments when I questioned myself, but every challenge pushed me to become more resilient, improve my craft, and keep showing up. Looking back, those obstacles shaped both me and my business into what they are today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an open-format DJ, and I specialize in weddings, corporate events, festivals, and private celebrations, ANYthing that involves a DJ. I love being able to walk into any room, read the crowd, and create an experience that people will remember long after the event is over. For me, it’s never just about playing music, it’s about bringing people together and creating moments they’ll always talk about.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the events or the brands I’ve worked with, it’s the impact I’ve been able to make. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I’ve had so many women and young girls reach out to me saying they never realized DJing was something they could actually pursue until they saw me. That means more to me than any booking.
I want to continue breaking stereotypes and showing women that there’s room for us in spaces where we’re often underrepresented, not just in DJing, but in other businesses too. I hope my journey gives other women the confidence to bet on themselves, work smart and hard, and I want little girls to grow up knowing you can do what you want and make a profit. If seeing me DJ makes someone believe they belong there too, then that’s one of my greatest accomplishments.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
When I moved from Cleveland to Austin, I had to rebuild my network from scratch. I never been to Austin, I didn’t know a soul here! Every opportunity I’ve earned has come from consistency, relationships, and showing up.
Another thing I think surprises people is that, outside of DJing, I’m also growing a career in tech. A lot of people only know me as a DJ, but I’m passionate about both industries. I love proving that you don’t have to limit yourself to one path, you can build multiple careers and be successful at both.
