Life & Work with Zoe Golden-Johnson of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Golden-Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first discovered my passion for photography when I was about 16 years old. That passion led me to attend St. John’s University, where I majored in photography and realized it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My grandfather played a major role in inspiring me to pursue photography, planting the seed that eventually grew into a career. My mother also shared a piece of advice that has stayed with me throughout my life: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I couldn’t agree more.

After graduating, I spent four years working at a photography studio in Albany, where I gained valuable experience and honed my craft. When I moved back to Wappingers Falls, I knew the time had finally come to take the next step and start my own photography business. My family has always been my biggest supporters and I am so grateful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business definitely wasn’t a completely smooth road. While I had experience working in photography, there was still so much to learn when it came to running a business. From marketing and networking to managing finances and building a client base, every step came with its own challenges.

That being said, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible support of my community. The people around me have trusted me with some of their most important moments, recommended me to friends and family, and continued to support my business as it has grown. Their encouragement and belief in me helped turn a dream into a reality, and for that I’ll always be grateful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I truly love all niches of photography, but if I had to choose a favorite, working with families would be at the top of the list. There is something incredibly special about being part of a family’s journey and watching them grow over the years. Seeing a couple go from welcoming their first child to celebrating their fourth is such a heartwarming experience, and it’s one of the things I love most about what I do.

I have never liked limiting myself to one specific specialty. While many people have encouraged me to focus on a single niche, I genuinely enjoy challenging myself and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Whether I’m photographing families, businesses, events, or something completely new, I love the opportunity to learn, create, and grow as a photographer. That’s actually what I’m most proud of is that I have never put myself in a box, and I continue to embrace every opportunity that comes my way.

What truly sets me apart is the connection I build with the people I work with. I take the time to get to know the families, children, business owners, and individuals in front of my camera. My goal is not just to gain a client, but to build a genuine relationship. Some of my favorite parts of this career are the friendships I’ve formed along the way, and I believe those connections help create authentic, meaningful photographs that people can cherish for years to come.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Without a doubt, my parents and grandparents deserve a tremendous amount of credit for where I am today. They have been my biggest supporters from the very beginning and have always believed in me.

My grandparents have played an especially important role in my journey. They have always been my biggest cheerleaders, sharing my work with others whenever they have the opportunity and helping me build my business in its early stages. Whether it was assisting me with photography gear, backdrops, or other essentials when I was just getting started, they were always there to support my passion and help me grow.

My mom and dad have also been incredibly influential. They never once questioned my decision to pursue photography and major in Fine Arts in college. Choosing a career in the arts can feel intimidating, and there is often uncertainty that comes with following a creative path. Knowing that they trusted my talent, supported my dreams, and encouraged me to pursue what I love gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.

I am incredibly grateful that they saw my potential and believed in me every step of the way.
The support, encouragement, and faith my family has shown me throughout the years have been influential in both my personal and professional growth, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
