Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Stevenson.
Hi Nick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’d been painting since I can remember. When I was an actor I found it difficult to do both art and acting. I always doodled on the side. Always designing or sketching on the back of napkins, I didn’t want to go to art school as I thought artists were weird. So I went to acting school. That was worse!
But I loved it. We’re all a bunch of misfits with stories to tell.
I use both the story telling aspect and visuals to create what ever comes out. There’s a freedom in my works. An innate sense of play. I believe that has been engrained by trying to do things many different ways other than doing something repetitiously without experimentation.
I’m here because I felt a deep pull back to placing colors. Telling stories. I lost my footing after I closed the door on acting. There was a deep emptiness. Almost as if I had a death in the family. I needed an outlet so I gravitated towards art again.
I am and always will be a story teller. My art allows me to do as such without having to be on stage. I much prefer to be in the background these days so I can watch someone be affected or appreciate and take in my work. It’s a wonderful sight.
I have to thank Big Bend, Texas for opening me up again.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a hard road. But once you get out of your own way, give no fucks and do your thing. It all seems to been falling into place. Don’t let the outside distractions get to you.
Stay the course with your creativity. I’m in a place where I can access it on a regular basis. I’ve found a way for my art to feed me joy and happiness. I thought I had to be sad most of the time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist. I paint artworks big and small that move people or simply look pretty next to your couch.
I’m known for my abstract Cowboy Picasso’s, roadrunners and desert themed family members going about their way with a native touch.
I’m also formerly known as an actor/writer/director having worked on television shows such as Orange Is The New Black, Person Of Interest, The Son and many more.
I think what sets me apart is the color pallets I use. My application of narrative. A story. I try to allow you to think. I don’t focus on one particular style. I paint in the moment and on the fly. So you’ll see a nice barrage of different stiles yet you’ll still know it’s a Nick Stevenson.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t be so critical of yourself. Stop comparing. You will find your flow state when you’re uniquely yourself.
Care less of others opinions.
