Today we’d like to introduce you to Sedric Acevedo.
Hi Sedric, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with a camera in my family’s hands before I ever held one myself. Home videos, photography, and storytelling became the way I made sense of the world. As I got older, I built a career creating commercial photography and films, but behind the work I was also navigating significant personal challenges, including childhood trauma, the loss of my mother to cancer, and later my own physical and mental health struggles.
Those experiences changed the way I approach storytelling. Instead of simply creating beautiful images, I became interested in telling honest human stories that help people feel seen. Today I’m directing my first feature documentary, Between the Blue and Invisible Ultraviolet, a deeply personal film that combines archival footage, AI, and cinematic filmmaking to explore memory, grief, trauma, and healing.
I’m still learning every day. My journey hasn’t been linear, but every setback has strengthened my belief that vulnerability and creativity can coexist. My goal is to create work that not only looks beautiful, but leaves people feeling understood and reminds them that even in our darkest moments, there is still hope.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve experienced childhood trauma, lost my mother to cancer at a young age, and have spent the last several years navigating physical disabilities, chronic pain, and mental health challenges that changed nearly every aspect of my life. There were times when my career slowed down because survival had to come before creativity.
Professionally, I’ve also faced the same obstacles many independent creatives encounter—building a business from scratch, learning through failure, wearing every hat, and finding ways to keep creating even when resources were limited.
Looking back, those struggles fundamentally changed the way I tell stories. They’ve made me more empathetic, more intentional, and more interested in creating work that explores what it means to be human. Today, I don’t see those experiences as something to hide. They’ve become the foundation of the stories I choose to tell and the reason I believe authentic storytelling has the power to help people feel less alone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve never been interested in creating beautiful images just for the sake of beauty. I started in fashion and commercial photography, where I learned how to direct people, build visual worlds, and tell stories in a single frame. Over time, those skills naturally evolved into filmmaking.
Today I see myself less as a photographer and more as a storyteller. Every project I create—whether it’s a commercial, a portrait, or my feature film Between the Blue and Invisible Ultraviolet—is rooted in the same question: Can this help someone feel seen?
Looking back, photography gave me a career, but filmmaking gave me a purpose.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I honestly don’t think my favorite childhood memory is a single moment. It’s the feeling of being with my mom before life became complicated. Watching old VHS tapes now, I see the little things I couldn’t appreciate as a child—her laugh, the way she looked at me, our family together. Those memories have become the foundation of who I am and the reason I tell stories. They remind me that time is fragile, and that preserving even the smallest moments can become someone’s greatest treasure years later.
