Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Armendariz.
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t plan on ending up in accounting—far from it.
I actually started out in nursing school, but by my second semester, I knew it wasn’t the right fit. So I pivoted and took a job in accounts payable, which eventually led to a 10-year career as a senior bookkeeper for a pipeline company. Along the way, I discovered what I was really good at: solving problems, building systems, and helping businesses grow.
I loved the work, but deep down, I knew I wanted to build something of my own.
After years of helping that company scale, the business was eventually sold. When it happened, the owner handed me a bonus and said, “We couldn’t have done it without you.” That moment stuck with me. It was validation that the work I did behind the scenes truly mattered.
I used that bonus to launch my first business—a porta potty company. Not exactly what most people picture when they think of entrepreneurship, but it taught me invaluable lessons about sales, operations, customer service, and what it really takes to run a business.
For several years, I worked full-time in oil and gas, ran the porta potty company, and took on bookkeeping clients at night. Looking back, I’m not entirely sure how I survived on that little sleep, but somehow I did.
Eventually, the demand for my bookkeeping and advisory services outgrew everything else. Business owners weren’t just looking for someone to reconcile accounts—they needed a partner who could help them understand their numbers, make smarter decisions, and build profitable companies.
So we sold the porta potty business, and I went all in on what would become Gemini Tax.
Today, Gemini Tax helps entrepreneurs across Texas and beyond with bookkeeping, tax strategy, CFO advisory, and business growth planning. I’ve sat in boardrooms, worked in oilfields, owned a blue-collar service business, and helped companies navigate everything from startup growth to multi-million-dollar operations.
That experience shaped how I serve clients today. I understand the challenges of business ownership because I’ve lived them myself.
At the end of the day, Gemini Tax exists for one reason: to help hardworking business owners gain clarity, keep more of what they earn, and build businesses and lives they’re proud of.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Anyone who tells you entrepreneurship is a smooth road either forgot the hard parts or hasn’t been in business very long.
One of my biggest challenges was learning that being great at the work and being great at running a business are two completely different skill sets. Early on, I thought if I worked hard enough, cared enough, and delivered great results, everything else would take care of itself. It doesn’t.
I’ve had to learn how to hire, lead, delegate, create systems, hold people accountable, and make difficult decisions when things weren’t working. Some of those lessons were expensive. Some were frustrating. All of them helped me grow.
There was also a period where I was working full-time in oil and gas, running a porta potty company, and taking bookkeeping clients at night. Looking back, I have no idea how I kept all the plates spinning. There were plenty of late nights, early mornings, and moments where I questioned whether I was crazy for trying to do it all.
As Gemini grew, new challenges appeared. Building a team, maintaining quality, managing growth, and balancing client expectations became just as important as the accounting work itself. I’ve lost clients I thought would stay forever, hired people who weren’t the right fit, and made decisions that I would absolutely handle differently today.
But every setback taught me something valuable. In many ways, the challenges became my greatest education.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that growth requires change. The systems, habits, and mindset that get you to one level won’t necessarily get you to the next. Every stage of business demands a different version of you as a leader.
Today, I don’t look at obstacles as signs that something is wrong. They’re usually signs that you’re growing. And if there’s one thing entrepreneurship has taught me, it’s that resilience matters just as much as talent.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Gemini Tax has evolved far beyond a traditional bookkeeping firm.
Today, we’re a financial advisory and tax strategy firm that helps business owners understand their numbers, increase profitability, reduce tax liability, and make smarter decisions as they grow.
Yes, we provide bookkeeping and tax services, but that’s not what clients ultimately hire us for. They hire us because they want clarity. They want to know where their cash is going, whether they’re making money, how to improve margins, how to scale responsibly, and how to keep more of what they earn.
Most business owners didn’t start their company because they love financial statements. They started because they had a skill, a vision, or a passion. Our job is to translate the financial side of the business into information they can actually use to make decisions.
We work with growth-minded entrepreneurs across industries such as construction, oilfield services, trucking, real estate, and professional services. Many of our clients are generating anywhere from several hundred thousand dollars to tens of millions in annual revenue and need more than bookkeeping—they need strategic guidance.
What sets Gemini apart is that we combine financial reporting, tax strategy, and business advisory under one roof. Instead of looking backward once a year, we’re helping clients look forward. We’re discussing profitability, cash flow, hiring decisions, equipment purchases, expansion opportunities, entity structures, and long-term wealth-building strategies.
I’m especially proud that we’ve built a firm focused on relationships, not transactions. We become trusted advisors to our clients. We celebrate their wins, help them navigate challenges, and often serve as a sounding board for major business decisions.
At the end of the day, our mission is simple: help business owners build stronger companies and create lasting wealth for their families. The bookkeeping provides the numbers. The strategy creates the results.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is creating opportunities—for my family, my team, and the business owners we serve.
Growing up, I learned that success isn’t just about what you earn; it’s about what you’re able to build and pass on to others. That’s probably why I’ve always been drawn to helping entrepreneurs. When a business owner succeeds, it creates jobs, supports families, strengthens communities, and opens doors for future generations.
Family is at the center of everything I do. As a wife, a mother, and a business owner, I understand how challenging it can be to balance ambition with the people who matter most. One of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping business owners gain control of their finances is because I’ve seen firsthand how financial stress affects every part of life.
I’m also passionate about creating opportunities for my team. I want Gemini to be a place where people can grow professionally, build meaningful careers, and be part of something bigger than themselves.
Ultimately, what matters most is impact. Long after the numbers, tax returns, and financial reports are forgotten, I want to know that I helped people build better businesses, create more freedom, and leave a legacy they’re proud of. If we can help someone spend more time with their family, achieve a dream they’ve been working toward, or feel confident about their future, that’s success to me.
