Today we’d like to introduce you to Darin Pleasant.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Grey Rock Tennis Club’s story is really one of dedication and community. Long before it became Grey Rock, many Austinites knew it as Circle C Tennis Club, and for the past 20 years Darin Pleasant has been part of that journey.
Darin started as a teaching professional and spent years helping players of every age and skill level discover and enjoy the game. In 2016, he became Director of Tennis, bringing with him a deep understanding of both the club and the community it serves. Rather than changing what made the club special, his goal has been to build on it.
His vision has always been simple: create a place where everyone feels welcome. Whether someone is picking up a racquet for the first time, training for tournament play, or looking for a fun league with friends, Grey Rock should feel like home.
That philosophy continues to shape everything we do. We’ve expanded junior development, grown adult leagues and clinics, and worked to create a clear pathway for players to improve while never losing sight of what matters most, building relationships and fostering a love for the game.
One of the most rewarding parts of the past two decades has been watching generations of families grow up at the club. Kids who learned to play here are now adults bringing their own children onto the same courts. Those stories are what make Grey Rock more than just a tennis facility, they make it a community.
As we continue to grow, we’re proud to carry forward the culture that has been built here over the last 20 years while continuing to welcome the next generation of players and families.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, but that’s part of what has made the journey so rewarding.
Like any club that’s been around for decades, Grey Rock has experienced its share of changes. We’ve seen the facility evolve, weather challenges, changing participation trends, and the growing demand for court time as tennis continues to grow in popularity. Through it all, one of our biggest priorities has been finding ways to grow without losing the welcoming atmosphere that has always made this club special.
Another challenge has been meeting the needs of such a diverse tennis community. On any given day we’re serving young children taking their very first lesson, competitive juniors training for tournaments, adults returning to the game after years away, and league players who simply love being on the court with friends. Creating programs that help each of those groups thrive takes constant evaluation and a willingness to adapt.
Under Darin’s leadership, we’ve always viewed those challenges as opportunities to improve. Every season we look for ways to strengthen our junior pathway, expand adult programming, improve communication, and create an even better experience for our members and guests.
The tennis industry is always changing, but our mission hasn’t. We want Grey Rock to be a place where people feel welcome, continue improving, and build friendships that last long after the match is over.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Darin Pleasant has dedicated his life to the game of tennis, first as a player and now as a coach and mentor. Before coming to Grey Rock, he was a nationally ranked junior, played Division I tennis at UCLA, competed professionally on the ATP Tour, and later built a reputation for developing nationally ranked junior players across California, Arizona, and Texas.
Although he has been part of the Grey Rock family for more than 20 years, Darin became Director of Tennis in 2016. Since then, his focus has been on creating a club that serves everyone, from beginners picking up a racquet for the first time to competitive juniors pursuing college tennis and adults looking to stay active and connected through the sport.
What sets Darin apart is his belief that great coaching is about much more than teaching strokes. He believes tennis should build confidence, character, discipline, and lifelong relationships. Every program at Grey Rock is designed with that philosophy in mind, creating an environment where players continue learning while enjoying the game.
Perhaps what he’s most proud of is the community that has been built over the years. Families have grown up at Grey Rock. Junior players have become college athletes, teaching professionals, and parents who now bring their own children back to the same courts. Watching those generations continue to share the game is one of the greatest rewards of his career.
While Darin’s playing accomplishments are impressive, he would likely tell you that his greatest success isn’t measured by rankings or titles, it’s measured by the thousands of players whose lives have been positively impacted through the game of tennis.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to Darin is creating a place where people genuinely enjoy the game and feel like they belong. While developing great tennis players is important, he believes the greatest impact the sport can have is on people’s lives.
For Darin, tennis is about much more than winning matches. It’s about teaching perseverance, respect, sportsmanship, confidence, and the value of hard work. Whether he’s working with a five-year-old picking up a racquet for the first time, a junior chasing college tennis, or an adult returning to the game after many years, the goal is the same: help every player become the best version of themselves, both on and off the court.
He also believes that a successful tennis club is built on relationships. Some of the most meaningful moments come from watching players form lifelong friendships, seeing families spend time together on the courts, and welcoming back former juniors who now bring their own children to Grey Rock.
At the end of the day, Darin wants Grey Rock Tennis Club to be known not just for quality coaching, but for being a place where people feel welcomed, challenged, supported, and excited to come back. If players leave with a love for the game and memories they’ll carry for a lifetime, then he considers that a success.
