Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Rox.
Hi Katy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey actually started with a minor family crime at the ripe old age of three! I managed to sneak my uncle’s camera and happily used up his precious film, capturing a deeply artistic, avant-garde shot of… a door. He wasn’t thrilled at the time, but who would have known that was the spark for my entire career?
I’ve always been drawn to art, and though I actually went to school for architecture, that background really became the foundation of how I see the world. It taught me to love design, lines, and light, which eventually pulled me right back to my true passion: photography.
As a self-taught photographer, I built my foundation by learning on my own and eventually having the incredible opportunity to work directly under renowned photographers from all over the world. But when it came to choosing a specialty, wedding photography was an absolute no-brainer for me. I am a total sucker for love! I genuinely adore hearing how couples met, how they fell in love, and being able to capture those raw, joyful emotions is the greatest honor.
Getting to where I am today, having shot nearly 300 weddings! Honestly, it took a lot of heart and grit. My biggest milestone was actually navigating the pandemic. When the world shut down, and 90% of my weddings were canceled or postponed, it was a massive test. But I chose patience and resilience, refusing to let the chaos drag me down. The wedding industry is constantly evolving, and learning to pivot, grow, and ride the waves with a positive attitude is exactly how I’ve built a business that I still love every single day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, definitely not a smooth road, but the bumps are where the magic happened!
My first major reality check happened at the very first wedding I ever shot. I quickly realized I knew next to nothing about off-camera flash, and that cameras simply can’t work miracles in low light without artificial help. Knowing I wanted to master it, I hit the books, watched endless videos, and attended workshops dedicated entirely to light. Today, low-light and nighttime weddings are my absolute specialty, but it took real dedication to get here, and honestly, I’m still learning something new at every single wedding!
Imposter syndrome was also a massive hurdle. Because I went to school to study architecture rather than photography, I used to doubt myself. But over time, I realized architecture gave me the ultimate foundation. It trained my eye to see design, leading lines, and patterns in a way that completely shapes my style today.
Then there’s the challenge of balancing the creative side with running a business. Luckily, I’ve had a hustle spirit since I was eight years old! I grew up helping with my family’s business, and as a kid, I even started my own little side-hustle buying and selling silver jewelry. It taught me how to talk to clients and navigate business logistics early on. Still, finding a work-life balance is a daily practice. Alongside photography, I’m a wife, a mom, and I homeschool my son. My motto has become ‘one step at a time.’ I’ve had to learn how to prioritize, delegate, and most importantly, when to say a polite ‘no.’
Even directing couples and commanding a crowded room was a struggle at first. But with every wedding, I gain more certainty. I’ve learned how to make even the most camera-shy couples feel completely at ease, proving that every struggle along the way was just a stepping stone to where I am now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding photographer based in the Austin area, serving couples all across Texas. At my core, I create images that are bright, vibrant, and timeless. I love capturing raw, editorial-luxury emotions during the day, but my absolute specialty. What I’m most known for is my mastery of low-light and nighttime photography. While many photographers shy away from dark venues or night skies, I run toward them! Because of my background in architecture, I look at artificial light and spaces like a puzzle, creating dramatic, gorgeous nighttime images that my couples absolutely cherish.
When clients leave me reviews, they consistently highlight three things: my vibrant style, how stunning their final galleries are, and my personality. I have a real knack for making camera-shy or self-proclaimed ‘awkward’ couples feel completely relaxed, confident, and beautiful in front of my lens.
What sets me apart is my approach to ‘affordable luxury.’ I believe every couple deserves that high-end, luxury experience and breathtaking imagery without it feeling out of reach. I bring a high-energy, warm, and fun vibe to every wedding day, acting as a calming force and a cheerleader all at once.
As for what I’m most proud of? It’s the fact that I’ve successfully photographed nearly 300 weddings and built a thriving, award-winning business from scratch, all while staying completely present as a wife and homeschooling my son. Proving to myself and to my son that you can chase your creative dreams, run a luxury brand with heart, and prioritize family without sacrificing either is my greatest achievement.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If I could leave engaged couples with one piece of advice, it’s this: don’t let the stress of planning overshadow the joy of what you’re actually celebrating! The wedding day goes by in a beautiful, wonderful blur, but the marriage you’re building is what lasts forever.
When you’re choosing your vendors, especially your photographer, who will literally be attached to your hip all day, look for people who feel like old friends. Choose someone who makes you laugh, calms your nerves, and lets you be unapologetically yourselves. At the end of the day, the best photos don’t come from perfect poses; they come from real joy, raw emotions, and just having a blast. Take a deep breath, soak in every single second, and remember to just look at each other and smile. You’re marrying your person, and that’s the most beautiful part of all!
