We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
An artist’s career is a journey of learning, creating, and growing. It starts with building skills and finding a personal style through practice and experience. As artists create more work, they share it with others through exhibitions, social media, or by selling it. Over time, they gain confidence, build a reputation, and may work on commissions, collaborations, or teach others. An artist’s career is always changing as they continue to learn, explore new ideas, and express their creativity. But this is not a straight line. There are years of success and years of struggle. Struggle may look like a financially bad year after a good one. It may look like an idea didn’t resonate with the public. Sometimes its just personal issues interfering with creative flow. The most important thing is to keep doing the work. Keep finding your center.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Using the sensual qualities of oil, I create layered abstractions which explore the dynamics of color, line, and texture. The viewer is encouraged by their abstraction to interpret their experience of the work rather than the work itself. My work plays with the abstracted modern landscape often with a strong horizon line. I use light and dark, space and scale, encouraging the viewer to step into the work to react and reflect. My process is one in which the artist and paint are partners negotiating the surface of the canvas as if it had animate qualities.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I made and sold cotton candy during 2 summers on the Ocean City boardwalk as a teen.
