Today we’d like to introduce you to Ari Rastegar.
Hi Ari, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts with my family. My father came to the United States from Iran looking for opportunity, and I grew up watching what hard work, sacrifice, and gratitude actually looked like.
I was raised in Highland Park, Texas, and I’ve joked before that I felt like the poorest kid in the richest neighborhood. Being surrounded by success from an early age didn’t discourage me. It made me curious. It showed me what was possible and gave me something to chase.
Real estate found me early. My dad used to drive me around Dallas, point at the skyline, and tell me, “One day you’ll own buildings like those.” As a kid, you don’t realize how powerful those moments are, but that vision stayed with me.
While I was in law school, I took out a student loan, bought a piece of land, partnered with a local developer, and built my first project. I had no track record and very little capital, but I was willing to bet on myself.
That first deal taught me more than any classroom ever could. From there, I just kept building. Some deals worked, some didn’t, but every one taught me something.
Today, Rastegar Capital has grown into a national investment and development firm, and we’re working to launch something entirely new that brings together real estate, technology, AI, media, and investment under one umbrella. At the core, though, it’s still about the same thing it’s always been about: creating long-term value.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not even close.
I think people often see the highlights but not the years behind them. Every entrepreneur has setbacks, deals that fall apart, markets that change, and moments where you question yourself. I’ve had all of those.
Early on, one of the biggest challenges was simply earning credibility. I didn’t inherit a real estate company or come from a big institutional background. Every relationship, every investor, every opportunity had to be earned.
I’ve also learned that your character gets tested far more during difficult markets than good ones. When everything is going up, almost everyone looks smart. It’s during uncertainty that you find out how disciplined you really are.
On a personal level, I also had a speech impediment growing up. At the time it felt like a weakness, but looking back it taught me resilience long before I understood what resilience really meant.
In hindsight, many of the things I thought were disadvantages became some of my greatest strengths.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Rastegar Capital is a commercial real estate investment and development firm, but I’ve never thought of us as just a real estate company.
We’re really in the business of identifying where the world is going before everyone else gets there. Real estate happens to be one of the ways we express that conviction.
We invest across multiple asset classes and markets, but we’re always asking the same question: where are people, capital, and technology moving, and how do we position ourselves ahead of those trends?
What I’m most proud of isn’t a particular project. It’s that we’ve stayed true to our vision. We’ve never tried to build a conventional real estate firm. We’ve tried to build an entrepreneurial platform that can evolve as the world evolves.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience.
Intelligence matters. Vision matters. Relationships matter. But none of those things matter very much if you quit when things get difficult.
Business is never a straight line. Markets change. Deals don’t close. People disappoint you. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself more than once.
I’ve learned not to get too high when things are going well or too low when they’re not. The goal is to stay steady, keep learning, and continue making good decisions over a long period of time.
My faith plays a big role in that, as does discipline. I believe adversity isn’t something to fear. More often than not, it’s preparing you for whatever comes next.
