Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian & Zay Paley & Wilson.
Hi Christian & Zay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Christian & Zay are a Boston-based EDM artist duo. Both Christian and Zay were DJ’s individually for a few years before first meeting each other via a music discord in 2022. After a year of friendship which both hadn’t known would become life-long, the two decided to combine their talents in June of 2023 to become the artist duo, Different Font. The vision behind Different Font was to bring back the golden era of dance music – the nostalgic, euphoric sounds that the EDM community fell in love with in the 2010’s, but had been lost for quite some time. This motive drove Christian & Zay to build their unique, euphoric Progressive House driven sound and branding, which has now succeeded and is continuing to succeed in all facets that the two had hoped it would become one day. With recognition from the likes of Tate McRae, Dean Lewis, Frank Walker, Entertainment Weekly, MTV and more thus far, Different Font’s story is far from over, and in some ways, has just begun.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always struggles in the success, and that is the beauty of writing your own story. What we have learned is that nothing comes easy – there will always be hurdles to jump, and obstacles to overcome. Though we have had essentially no differences or disagreements between each other throughout the entirety, building a brand and sound to differentiate yourself from a large industry is extremely difficult – it requires a lot of sacrifice, a lot of time, and a lot of energy. To this day, we are still learning new things, and trying new things in our sound, in our social media engagement, etc. to continue to prosper and grow ourselves.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are Progressive House music artists / DJs. With our favorite artists and idols being The Chainsmokers, we wanted to build our brand and upbringing along the same roots that Drew and Alex had. The key to this was starting our sound and brand with nostalgic remixes of songs that people will always know, and if they came on the radio, you could sing every word to, but generally speaking, wouldn’t pop up in your head on any given day. Utilizing social media with these remixes was the key to our success – you can be the best music producer in the world, but without social media posts and successful engagement, you may never get to where you ultimately are destined to be in this day in age. Building our brand and producing Different Font remixes became a major success both on social media and on SoundCloud, which enabled us to build a reliable and excited fanbase, and fully establish our sound and brand.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is something that I personally believe will always be tied into any situation that success is a part of – the majority, if not all people don’t see the hours of hard work, dedication and craft you take time for to build this success day in and day out. In terms of luckiness, I think we are fortunate and lucky that our friendship has taken us to where we currently are now, and what the future looks like.
