Hidden Gems: Meet Karina Moreno of Confident Closet by Karina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Moreno.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I always loved fashion and had an eye for style. I was a 4-H sewing student in elementary school and even produced fashion shows in high school. I followed my passion in college, earning a bachelor’s degree with honors in Fashion Marketing & Management from the Art Institute. After graduating, I worked in restaurants while pursuing opportunities in fashion styling and event planning. Those experiences eventually led me to a role as a professional stylist for Stitch Fix. Finally, I realized that if I was going to be stressed about work, I wanted it to be for my own business. That’s how Confident Closet by Karina was born, a styling business where I do personal styling, shopping, closet edits, curated thrift boxes, and color analysis.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my own business certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but definitely the road I want to be on. I think the biggest challenge has been learning social media marketing. I actually joined Instagram specifically for my business, so I felt lightyears behind. It took a few posts and a lot of trial and error, but after getting my first client through social media, I knew I was doing something right.

We’ve been impressed with Confident Closet by Karina, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of my favorite services that I offer is color analysis. I love educating my clients, and it’s so much fun seeing how different shades and tones affect each person’s complexion. The best part is watching clients have that “aha!”moment when they see themselves light up in their best colors. Knowing they’ll always have a personalized color palette they can rely on for life is incredibly rewarding.

My second favorite service is curating thrift boxes. I absolutely love thrifting, and I like to think I’ve developed quite the talent for finding incredible pieces. There’s something so satisfying about discovering unique, high quality items that fit a client’s style and budget.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The fashion industry is always evolving and people will always need clothes. As long as people are buying clothes, there will be a need for stylists. I think the industry is continuing to shift toward virtual styling and personal shopping, which isn’t a bad thing. Personally, I enjoy both virtual and in-person appointments, so I’m excited to offer both options. I don’t see AI taking over my industry any time soon, especially with color analysis. Since AI can only observe your overtone and not your undertone (which is what color analysis is based on), I’ve seen it give several different answers using the same photo. In-person draping remains the most accurate way to determine someone’s best colors, which is why that personalized experience will continue to be valuable.
