Exploring Life & Business with Karina Davila of Georgetown Pie Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Davila.

Hi Karina , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a child I always enjoyed baking and watching Food Network. I used to knock on neighbor’s doors and sell banana bread and brownies. In high school I did culinary arts as an elective and really enjoyed it. My teacher encouraged me to pursue it as a career. I did get accepted one of the best culinary schools in the country, but I couldn’t afford it. So I started the Baking and Pastry Arts program at Austin Community College. It was the best decision I made. Through scholarships, my education was fully funded. I studied abroad in Europe and then finished a program at the International Culinary Center in New York that my James Beard Scholarship covered. It was such a fun and eye opening time in my life. Throughout these experiences, I worked in many kitchens to learn all I could. At 20, I became a kitchen manager at one of the first restaurants I worked in as a teen. I had my first child and when she was 3 months old, I decided to pursue my micro-bakery business, Georgetown Pie Co.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Owning a small business is not for the weak. It is never perfect nor smooth sailing. There are many different hurdles I had to go through, COVID being the huge one since it was 6 months into starting my business. Having a family with 4 young children is also really difficult. It is still hard to navigate but honestly it’s great being your own boss because you can be more flexible for your kids.

We’ve been impressed with Georgetown Pie Co. , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Georgetown Pie Co is a two time Georgetown’s Best winner in Desserts. It is a micro-bakery known for pies, poptarts, and cinnamon rolls. I am very fortunate to get to share what I love to do with the community.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family, without them, there would be no Georgetown Pie Co.
