Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Juan.
Hi Cara , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ladyfang has been a long and slow burning project. Cara (vox) is a free spirit and has bounced a lot between various cities. She met Chocolate (bass) first in Austin, where they worked on another project together. She met Rocky (drums) in New York City, also working on another project. Then the 3 of them finally combined forces in Austin and adopted Bread (guitar).
Ladyfang is a special group of friends who are just really committed to making art together. We all have multiple projects we are working on, but this is the longest running. It embodies fun and energy and poetry and fashion and community and love. And and and.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being an artist is never a smooth road. This is not unique to us. You are compelled or called to create, but there is no clear path to have that work accepted. There is no clear path for that work to translate into financial security. You are committing a ton of time every week and hoping its well spent. Artists are out here working 2 full time jobs: one that makes money and one that satiates your existence. And the older you get the more you add to the list: partners, aging parents, children, pets.
We are beyond grateful for organizations like HAAM that support artists by way of insurance, venues that commit to paying musicians, for people who fund us by buying t-shirts and magazines that shine light on our experiences. There are so many people out here supporting, we don’t want to discount that. But every year that passes and artists continue to stay the course is a feat. We are going on 10.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We love making sad girl dance music. We love performing live. We love getting to know the people in the audience after a show. Collaboration is huge to us.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Community. With each other, with the audience, with other artists. In 2026, the stakes for community are everything.
