Meet Vanessa Flores-Newton of Colors of Austin Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Flores-Newton.

Hi Vanessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve spent my career working at the intersection of people, systems and care. I began as a social worker supporting children and families in pediatric hospital settings, including intensive-care environments where families were navigating chronic illness, grief and crisis. I later moved into school social work, supporting adolescents and their families through mental-health challenges and major life transitions.

Those experiences showed me how important it is for people to receive care that recognizes their culture, identity, family and lived experience. That understanding eventually led me into private practice and to founding Colors of Austin Counseling, a group practice centered on culturally responsive, trauma-informed care.

Over time, my work expanded beyond the therapy room. I founded Brave and Well to help mental-health professionals build sustainable private practices, and I co-founded SocialNote to improve documentation and communication for school-based mental-health providers.

My path has not been completely linear, but every chapter has reinforced my belief that meaningful change happens through connection, healing and innovation. Today, I’m focused on building services, systems and opportunities that make care more accessible and strengthen the communities we serve.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. As a first-generation Latina from a border town, I have often had to navigate spaces where there was no clear roadmap and where people with backgrounds like mine were not always represented. I learned early how to move between cultures, expectations and responsibilities while still trying to define success for myself.

Becoming a mother added another layer to that journey. Building a career, growing businesses and leading a team while raising a family has required constant adjustment. There have been seasons of uncertainty, exhaustion and difficult choices, especially when balancing the desire to serve others with the need to protect my own well-being and be present for my family.

Professionally, moving from social work into private practice and entrepreneurship also meant learning many things outside of my formal training. I had to become comfortable with risk, make decisions without having every answer and continue moving forward when plans changed.

Those experiences shaped how I lead today. They taught me that resilience is not about doing everything perfectly or alone. It is about staying connected to your values, asking for support, adapting when necessary and continuing to build opportunities for yourself and others.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Colors of Austin Counseling is an inclusive and affirming therapy collective built around the belief that people deserve care that recognizes the whole person—their culture, identity, relationships, family and lived experiences.

We provide therapy and wellness services for individuals, couples and families, with particular experience supporting culturally diverse communities and people navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, shame, family-of-origin concerns and major life transitions.

What sets us apart is the intention behind both the care we provide and the environment we create. Our work is clinically grounded, but it is also relational, honest and human. We want clients to feel that they can bring their full selves into the room without having to minimize, translate or disconnect from important parts of who they are.

We are not only focused on treating symptoms. We help people understand their stories, strengthen their sense of worth and develop more authentic ways of living and connecting. We also recognize that meaningful mental-health care requires representation, cultural humility and an understanding of how larger systems affect individual well-being.

I am most proud that Colors of Austin has grown into a brand associated with belonging, vulnerability, healing and community. As a first-generation Latina, creating a space where people from historically underrepresented communities can see themselves reflected in their providers and receive inclusive, affirming care is deeply personal to me.

Our broader work also extends beyond the therapy room. Through Brave and Well, we support mental-health professionals in building sustainable private practices, and through SocialNote, we are working to improve documentation and communication for school-based mental-health providers.

Across each organization, the purpose remains the same: to create thoughtful services, tools and spaces that strengthen human connection and make healing more accessible.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five to ten years, I believe the mental-health industry will continue moving toward more flexible, holistic and accessible models of care. Traditional therapy will remain essential, but more people are looking for support that also incorporates wellness, creativity and specialized approaches.

At Colors of Austin Counseling, we see an opportunity to grow beyond a traditional therapy model by offering more specialty-based care, including somatic practices, yoga, EMDR and other complementary modalities that support healing through both the mind and body. We also want to create more space for creative and experiential forms of care that meet people in different ways.

A membership model could help make these services more consistent and accessible by giving clients ongoing access to therapy, wellness offerings, educational resources and community-based support. Through our podcast and recurring partnerships with schools, businesses and local organizations, we also hope to expand conversations about mental health and reach people who may not otherwise enter a therapy office.

I believe the industry is moving toward stronger ecosystems of care rather than relying only on individual sessions or crisis-based support. Our goal is to continue expanding access locally while building resources, partnerships and offerings that can serve people well beyond Austin.
