Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Johnson.
Hi Adam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started learning guitar at 10 years old and by 13 was playing open mic nights. In high school I formed my first band with friends and we started performing regularly around San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio and the Hill Country. Since then I’ve maintained my own band, as well as been a side guy for numerous Austin acts and touring groups like Golden Dawn Arkestra. I’ve now toured in Europe, the UK, Canada, Mexico and South America.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s been plenty of struggles along the way, mostly when it comes to supporting myself financially. And of course at times you have to re assess what you’re doing in the music world to make sure you’re creatively happy. That being said, I’ve landed in a place now that I feel very proud of and am content with my musical outlets. I don’t think I would change a thing even if I could go back and do it all again.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mainly write songs, play guitar and sing. However I’ve also done numerous bass gigs for artists in Austin and been a studio musician. I’m proud of so much of what I’ve done, but am always most proud of whatever I’m working on next. That’s the motivation that keeps me going and excited to keep doing music. I guess what sets me apart from others is the ability to be a musical chameleon, while at the same time constantly trying to stay true to what I think “my sound” is.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just enjoy the process. Love the music, not the hustle. All of those things will be a part of it no matter what, but if you don’t it for the love of music you’ll get burnt out real fast.
I also wish I could tell younger me to just always aim high, even if you don’t think you have the right gear or the right resources. Again, all those things will come. Don’t wait around for everything to be perfect, just create whatever you can with that you have! Others will respect that way more.
