Community Highlights: Meet Mustafa Dar of Refilld Co. LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mustafa Dar.

Hi Mustafa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Pakistan, a country where access to clean water is still a privilege, not a right. Many people in my community struggle to access something that most people in the developed world take completely for granted. When I moved to Austin, Texas, I saw the other side of that problem. Clean water exists everywhere here, yet corporations have turned it into a billion dollar industry, charging people for something that should be free. That contrast never sat right with me. So I started asking one question: what if every time someone refilled their water bottle, for free, it also helped someone who has no access to clean water at all?
That question became Refill’d. A smart water station installed inside gyms, padel courts and pickleball clubs, completely free for members to use, powered by brand partners, and donating to clean water charities with every 500 refills. We recently partnered with Well Aware, an Austin based charity that has already transformed over 583,000 lives through clean water projects across East Africa. We are currently in prototype phase, with signed venue partners in Austin and a growing community of brands and supporters who believe water shouldn’t be a luxury.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Building a hardware and software product from scratch as a solo founder is genuinely one of the hardest things I have ever done. One of my biggest early challenges was understanding the commercial side of the water and beverage industry deeply enough to build a credible alternative. Having worked at Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages in Houston, where I was part of their revenue growth management team working across their beverage portfolio, I saw first hand how corporations think about water as a product and a profit centre. That experience was eye opening and honestly lit a fire under me to build something better. As an immigrant founder building in Austin without a large network or funding, every single step has required more effort than I anticipated. Finding the right engineering partners, convincing venues to take a chance on an unproven product, and building credibility from nothing. There were many moments of doubt. But every obstacle I had overcome confirmed that Refill’d needs to exist. The harder it has been, the more convinced I have become that solving this problem matters.

As you know, we’re big fans of Refilld Co. LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Refill’d is a smart hydration company built on one simple belief: water should be free and every refill can create real impact in the world. We install free smart water stations inside gyms, padel courts, pickleball clubs and universities. Members refill their bottles completely free of charge. The stations are powered by brand partners who advertise on the screen, and after every 500 refills we donate directly to Well Aware, an Austin based charity that has already transformed over 583,000 lives through clean water projects across East Africa.

What sets Refill’d apart is the model. We’re not asking people to donate. We’re not selling water. We’re turning something people already do every day, refilling a water bottle, into an act of genuine global impact. One refill here in Austin. Clean water there in Kenya. One refill. Two lives changed.

We are currently in the prototype phase with signed venue partners in Austin, Texas and a confirmed charity partnership with Well Aware. We are actively looking for fitness brands, venues and sponsors who want to be part of this from the very beginning.

What I’m most proud of is building something that serves three groups at once, being venue members who get free water, brands who get meaningful reach and communities in East Africa who get clean water. Nobody loses. Everyone wins.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is impact that actually reaches people who need it.

I grew up in Pakistan where clean water is not guaranteed. I watched people in my community struggle for something that the rest of the world treats as completely ordinary. That experience has never left me. It shaped how I see the world and ultimately why I moved to the United States and chose to build Refill’d.

But what matters to me goes beyond the product. It is the idea that ordinary people doing ordinary things, like refilling a water bottle at their gym, can collectively create extraordinary change for communities on the other side of the world. You don’t have to be a philanthropist. You don’t have to write a cheque. You just have to stay hydrated. It couldn’t be easier to give to charity.

I also care deeply about proving that business and social impact are not opposites. Too many people believe you have to choose between building something profitable and building something good. Refill’d exists to prove that wrong. Brands win. Venues win. Members win. And communities in East Africa get clean water. That is the model I am building and it is what gets me up every morning.

Water shouldn’t be a luxury. That is what matters most to me. And I am going to spend every day making sure it isn’t. We are starting with Well Aware but with the goal to partner with as many charity organisations we can to get clean water to people in need.
