Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrie Smith.
Hi Sherrie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was in the corporate world as a workers’ compensation risk and claims manager for 30 plus years. I became so burned out and was looking at what I could use my transferable skills to comfortably change over to. I was newly remarried and my husband was so supportive of whatever I was wanting to do……which was so new to me. In my past marriage it was so different. He would never let me go back to college to do what I truly wanted to do. So since I knew so much about the human anatomy, psychology, medical terminology, ect., and the fact that I have always loved skincare and self care, I just felt that it was a no brainer to turn in my resignation with the corporate job and enroll into esthetics school. I did all of that during the pandemic and I do not regret one thing. Some would have thought that my age at the time, 56, would have been too old to start over. But I was use to starting over. Divorced from my first marriage of 24 yrs…….walked away from everything and started my life completely over. Then married the 2nd time for 3 1/2 yrs, and filed for divorce he took everything. So again, started all over. So you see, I survived abusive, controlling relationships and felt if I can walk away from that and rebuild my life I can do anything. No regrets…….its made me a very strong resilient woman. When I graduated esthetic school, before I even had my license, I had a job at a med spa. But quickly decided that wasn’t for me. Then went to a local day spa where I stayed fully booked with back to back clients. I worked there for approximately 6 months before my husband talked me into opening up my own business. I was scared at first, but I just jumped in, which his help and support with both feet. Abd you know what? I’m so glad I did! Has it been hard……absolutely. But wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I was in my a suite that I rented for one year when I started looking for something bigger. The rent was too expensive for the little closet of a suite that I was renting, so I decided I would find something that would allow me to rent out larger private suites to other females in our industry for cheaper prices. And that’s what I did! I found a great place in Round Rock that needed some love and updating. I had someone that wanted to go into business with me. I had a lot of concerns but decided to move forward with it. Unfortunately it was not the best decision I ever made. We opened up our business in March of 2022 and signed a 3 yr lease. In that 3 yrs there was zero profit made. So I had to make a decision. I decided that I could not continue to be in partnership with someone that wasn’t putting in as much as I was and that did not have the same goals. I felt she was holding me back…..like my past marriages. So it was time to let her know we needed to dissolve the business and each of us go our separate ways. Which we did. As soon as I made that decision, things changed immediately for the better. For the first time in three years I was making a profit……not only in the business of Studio Suite Rental, but in my esthetic business. Sometimes in life the hard choices we have to make end up opening up so much more happiness and opportunity for us. So the advise I always give is, never be afraid to start over no matter how old you are. Our happiness is our longevity! I’m 61 and never been happier and my businesses are thriving!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not. Being a solo esthetician, we have so many different hats we have to wear. When you first go out on your own we have to scratch and fight to build our clientele. So for me marketing myself has been the hardest.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve been an esthetician since 2021. I offer customized facials, intra oral buccal massage, and waxing.
I’m know for my intra oral buccal massage and my knowledge the human anatomy anatomy is what makes me stand apart from others, as well as my energy that I bring into my treatment room.
What matters most to you?
What matters to me is making sure that I give each client an experience that they have never experienced before when getting a facial. To have them leave with not only taking care of the skin concerns, but feeling more refreshed and less stressed. I not only work with releasing tension from their facial muscles, but I also reset their central nervous system by just using my magical touch.
