Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Vargas.

Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Dance has been part of my life for more than 20 years, and what started as a personal passion grew into a lifelong career and a way to serve my community. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to teach, perform, compete and travel internationally, but what has always meant the most to me is seeing the impact dance has on people’s lives.

Over the years, I directed dance companies, coached performance teams, taught a wide variety of people from all over the world, and worked alongside incredible artists in the Austin, US and international communities. Those experiences eventually led to co-founding Rhythm House ATX, a place where people of all backgrounds can learn, connect, and feel at home through dance.

Our vision has always been bigger than teaching steps. We wanted to create a welcoming space that celebrates social dance, preserves the culture these dances come from, and gives people a place to build confidence, friendships, and community. Today, Rhythm House offers classes in multiple partner dance styles such as, latin, country, swing , west coast swing, ballroom, wedding couples, Salsa and Ladies/ Femme dance teams and more. We support local artists and organizations, and continues to build to grow as a hub for dance in Austin.

Looking back, every challenge and opportunity has reinforced why I do this work. Seeing someone walk through our doors for the first time and leaving smiling, more confident, and connected to others reminds me that dance has the power to change lives, and I’m grateful to be a part of that every day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always bumps in the road, I have dealt with an industry that can be brutal, it relies heavily on close relationships and sometimes people’s intentions can be more self centered and malicious. Learning to recognize who is actually there for the scene and its people vs. people that are in it for themselves has been a great lesson for me.
I have had to start over again before when I moved from San Antonio to Austin. As hard as that was, it taught me how to stand on my own two feet and become the independent person that I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Salsa and am known for my teaching skills, teams, and bubbly personality. I also teach all Latin, Country, Swing, Wedding couples, and more. I’ve been dancing and teaching for over 20 years and have had the opportunity to perform, compete, choreograph, and teach across the U.S., and internationally.

While I’m proud of these experiences, what I’m most proud of is the impact of the community, and the relationships that are built through dance.
My goal has always been to make people feel welcomed, challenged, and inspired every time they walk through our doors. Whether someone is preparing for their first social dance, or performing on stage, I want them to leave more confident than when they arrived.

I think what sets me apart is that I care just as much about the history and culture behind the dances as I do the technique. Social dance has the power to bring people together across different backgrounds, and I believe it’s important to honor the traditions of each dance. I also think the fact that I try to make everyone feel comfortable and laugh is what sets me apart. I firmly believe that you can learn better when you’re having a good time and are relaxed.

at the end of the day, seeing students grow, watching friendships form and helping people discover a life-long love of dance is what makes this all worth it.

How do you define success?
Success to me is measured by impact we have on the people’s lives and the community we’ve built together.
