Meet Derek Moore of Rap Nerd Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Moore.

Hi Derek, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started with me simply loving hip-hop and wanting to find my place within it. I originally began as a rapper, and around 2016 I shifted more heavily into music production. Even then, I always felt that my voice, perspective and ability to communicate would eventually play a major role in my path—I just did not know exactly what that would look like yet.

Rap Nerd started as a platform where I discussed mainstream hip-hop artists and topics. Over time, I realized that the biggest artists already had more than enough media coverage. Meanwhile, there were talented independent artists making great music who were struggling to get thoughtful reviews, interviews and real exposure. That realization caused another major pivot for me.

I began focusing Rap Nerd almost entirely on independent hip-hop. What started as commentary gradually developed into a larger media platform that now includes Rap Nerd Radio, music reviews, interviews, podcasts, live streams, playlists and written journalism. I wanted to walk in my purpose and be of service to the culture I loved so much. I also returned to school and earned my associate degree in journalism, which helped me strengthen the editorial side of the brand and take the work more seriously as both a business and a responsibility. Nov. 2027 I will obtain my Bachelors degree in Media and Communications.

My personal transformation has really been about learning that success does not always come from forcing yourself into the role you originally imagined. Sometimes your purpose becomes clearer as you continue creating, learning and paying attention to what is missing.

Today, my mission is to help independent artists feel seen, respected and taken seriously before they have major numbers, industry backing or a viral moment. I want Rap Nerd to become a trusted platform where artists can receive honest feedback, meaningful coverage and opportunities that can genuinely help them move forward.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out exactly where I fit in the music industry. I pivoted from being a rapper to a producer, then from covering mainstream hip-hop to building a platform focused on independent artists. Each shift required me to start over in some way and trust that the long-term vision would eventually make sense.

I have also had to build Rap Nerd Media while balancing family, school, and other responsibilities. Growing an independent media platform takes consistency, patience and a willingness to keep going even when the audience, income or opportunities are not growing as quickly as you hoped. It takes a lot of energy to keep a business running, while taking care of others and trying my best to stay sane. I never let the obstacles overwhelm me. I actually like being challenged, and I think I work better under pressure.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rap Nerd Media is an independent hip-hop media platform created to support developing artists. We provide music reviews, interviews, radio airplay, podcast coverage, livestreams, playlists, and written features. Our goal is to help artists gain exposure by providing digital assets for their portfolio. We aim to educate, and help them reach listeners who truly support independent music.

What sets Rap Nerd Media apart is our honest but respectful approach. We do not praise every release, but we also do not tear artists down for entertainment. I am most proud that Rap Nerd has become a trusted space where independent artists can feel seen, supported, and taken seriously.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as being able to build a profitable business while walking in my passion and purpose. I want financial freedom, but I also want the work to have meaning and create real opportunities for independent artists.

Long term, success means growing Rap Nerd Media into a lucrative company with lasting value. I want to build something that supports my family, impacts the culture, and continues long after I am gone.
