Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ Blurray

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Blurray.

DJ, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I guess it all started in 1998- I went to my buddy’s apartment for a party, and his roommate who was a DJ was there spinning some house/ techno kind of stuff. Even though that’s not my favorite genre of music, watching him work the tables & mixer was one of those “I want to learn” moments. Not too long after, I got my first DJ setup and started teaching myself some basic DJ skills and techniques. After doing a few house parties, I put my focus into learning the art of making Slowed & Chopped mixtapes. Eventually, one of my cd’s landed in the right hands and I was recruited to DJ for Texas Made Records & Austin based rap group, the Texas Hard Hittaz. Then, in 2005, I went solo & began releasing mixtapes on my own and doing projects with & for other artists around Texas & even other parts of the country. In 2011, I was nominated for & won “Best Chopped & Screwed Mixtape” at the Southern Entertainment Awards which led to me being invited to join The Chopstars DJ crew headed by Houston’s own OG Ron C where I spent the next 6 years dropping tapes. After taking a break from music to focus on homeowner life, I started back up in 2022 and am actively doing Slowed & Chopped remixes for independent artists.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hahaha Definitely not a smooth road, but what in life worth working for ever is, am I right? Unfortunately, yes, I’ve had to go up against quite a few obstacles. Everything from being cheated out of money, my studio being robbed while I was DJ’ing a gig, to parting ways with friends. There have certainly been some hurdles & lessons. But all in all, it wasn’t anything I couldn’t get through. And, most importantly, all struggles are learning lessons. It’s what you learn from that lesson and what you do with it that matters.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a DJ that specializes in Slowed & Chopped Mixtapes & Remixes. I’m known for “Tha MixTape Slayer” brand, along with the hundreds of mixtapes I’ve put out/ been apart of over the years. Since I started officially releasing mixtapes in 2002, there’s quite a few that I’m proud of- different works with Swishahouse Vets Big Pic, OG Lester Roy, Big Tike, Lil Pat, Magno & Yung Redd; the different genres of Slowed & Chopped tapes I’ve put out including Rock, Grunge & Country; can’t forget about the 6 Southern Ent. Awards Nominations; but most of all I’d have to say my slow jam R&B mixtape series “Between Tha Sheetz” since it netted me the “Best Chopped & Screwed Mixtape” award at the 2011 Southern Entertainment Awards.
I think what sets me apart from others is longevity, authenticity & consistency. I’ve spent years building the DJ Blurray “Tha MixTape Slayer” brand through mixtapes, remixes, and supporting artists while staying true to the culture that inspired me. Shout out to OG Ron C. Rest In Paradise DJ Screw & Michael “5000” Watts.
