Today we’d like to introduce you to Keke Powell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ms. Powell teaches started in 2020. I used it as a platform to help get resources for my classroom. As teachers, we spend a lot of our own money for our students and I wanted a creative way to help with costs. I never thought social media would have taken me where it is today. I work with a lot of different brands across the states and they help support getting supplies for my classroom. It’s fun to show my perspective on life and share my ideas with other educators too. I write a lot of reviews for restaurants, services, amazon, etc you name it! I enjoy creating unique experiences for my students and love to throw lots of room transformations for them. I want them to see school in a different life where its fun and enjoyable for all. I have won numerous awards, been on covers of books and magazines, and I’ve won over $25,000 worth of grants over the years. We tell our students to dream big and I want to show my students that the learning never stops even as an adult.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everything in life has its up and downs! I’m going into my 12th year of teaching and each year I’m just as excited as my first year. As a teacher, every day is different and we learn how to navigate all scenarios all the time. I use my summers traveling the world to help me get my mind right for the new school year. I attend many different professional developments around the world because I enjoy learning new things. In July, I went to Germany with the Transatlantic Outreach Program. We explored Munich, Leipzig, Berlin, and Potsdam. We did school visits, visited the foreign affairs offices, explored the city, and learned so much about the culture. Seeing all of these new places helps me learn things about myself to want to become a better teacher. I want to be the best version of myself for my students to have a great learning experience in my classroom.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Most people know me for my unique costumes. I have over 100 costumes and my students get a kick out of it! It really helps bring down the affective filter in the room and helping student see that school doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. We have to have a good balance of both. I’m also known as the teacher traveler. I enjoy attending professional development outside of Texas. There are so many amazing programs out there and I like to apply to all of them! You don’t know what you don’t know, so I am always willing to put myself out there. The worst someone can say to use is no!
I am most proud of becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. It’s the highest certification an educator can get! It took me three years to finish this journey and felt so rewarded when it was completed!
What set me apart from others is I’m not afraid to trying something out of my comfort zone. We always tell our students that we can do hard things, so I remind myself that and just say yes to adventure! I am ambassador for over 20 different companies and love to be an expert in utilizing different tools and resources in education.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by the way you can help the people around you. I’ve gotten numerous donations for my school community to help other educators be successful in the classroom. It’s about putting others before yourself and supporting everyone around you. I have an amazing group of people that love and support me and always remind me that I am doing awesome things. I have gotten over 2,000 books for my school over the years to help build our school library and give back to students thanks to The Leaders Readers Network!
