Meet Luz Plata of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luz Plata.

Hi Luz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion has always been teaching. In Mexico, I taught English and earned a certificate in teaching a second language. When I moved to the United States 14 years ago, I began teaching Spanish, and I quickly realized it was an even better fit for me because Spanish is my native language.

Teaching Spanish has given me the opportunity not only to teach a language, but also to share my Mexican culture, traditions, and experiences with my students. Over the years, I have taught students of different ages and levels, from children and teenagers to adults and seniors. Today, teaching continues to be my passion, and I love helping people learn Spanish in a practical, engaging, and meaningful way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. In the beginning, my biggest challenges were finding the best teaching methods and building my client base. Thumbtack helped me tremendously, along with referrals from my students.

For the last three years, I taught Spanish in private schools to students from 5th through 9th grade. It was a valuable experience, but I discovered that I especially enjoy teaching adults. Now, I am focusing mainly on adult students, while continuing to teach children and teenagers one-on-one or in small groups.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in teaching Spanish to adults and seniors in a practical, personalized, and engaging way. Over the years, I have taught more than 110 one-on-one students, as well as several groups, and I am proud to have received around 90 reviews.

Most of my students take classes online, which gives them the flexibility to learn from home at the time that works best for them. I also teach an in-person class at Westminster, where I have a wonderful group of about 10 students in their 80s and 90s.

What sets me apart is the personal connection I build with my students and the way I adapt each class to their level, interests, and goals. I want learning Spanish to be enjoyable, useful, and something they look forward to.

What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to continue doing what I love and expand my Spanish classes. Now that I am no longer teaching at a school, I would like to bring my classes to more senior living communities, adult groups, and companies.

I also plan to continue welcoming new one-on-one students whenever my schedule allows. My schedule is already quite full, which I am very grateful for, but I am excited to grow by creating more group classes and reaching new communities.
