Conversations with Joey Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Garcia.

Hi Joey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always like dancing and always liked hip hop culture since I was little, but never knew exactly what it was
It wasn’t till 2013 when I was 16 or 17 years of age, when I got into my first hip hop competitive team.
I got the opportunity to be part of a hard working team directed by Edson and Deedee Juarez and was able to compete and compete on a worlds stage. From there I started venturing out into making my own choreography, and being my own creative, got the opportunity to take many classes and travel, be part of different crews and teams, and with that came many experiences. Started teaching for local studios then finally opened up my own studio, COVID hit us all hard and I lost my business but never lost the love for dance. Moved to Austin Tx for a bit where I met many great people and many great dancers. Was able to take part in several gigs in Austin and teach at a couple of studios. Since then I’ve learned so much and continue to learn. I’ve been putting myself in situations where I can book gigs and putting myself in auditions to be able to gain more experience. I’ve and many ups and downs but my love and passion for this craft will never fade. I love growing learning and sharing. I one day hope to bring a spark and joy to peoples lives doing what I know best. Dance is love, my passion, my safe place , my escape and my everything. And I hope to be able to show the world what dance and expression through movement can bring us

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a bumpy road for sure. I’ve had to sacrifice a lot, and have had many losses and much success. I think anything you want in life will be like this. I’ve been homeless at a point just to be able to be in a city that can provide many opportunities and experience. I’ve worked my butt off to be okay financially just to be bake to get a flight ticket or my convention pass to train. I think one of the biggest things I’ve had to overcome is my anxiety and a fear of rejection. And I think the more I chase what I want the easier it gets

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think as a creative I like to think outside the box at times
Doesn’t matter if nobody likes it, it’s what makes me feel great no matter how unorthodox it could be. I love working on visuals and choreography cause it give me a chance to be able to say something without saying nothing at all, and I can bring it to a platform where I can be seen and heard not for just myself but with others too.
I’m most proud of my consistency and work ethic no matter how much I have against me I continue to push pass all the negativity. I’m also very proud of the creator I am today thanks to my peers and mentors for believing me and always pushing me to be my best

What’s next?
My plans for the future, is to be able to start my own brand that represents my creativity and my work. I would love to choreograph my own tour for a main stream artist and have my own dance conventions to where I can bring communities together. Another thing I would like to do is bring dancing and motion art into theaters and give other choreographers and artist a bigger platform and some more importance to their creativity cause they deserve it
