Exploring Life & Business with Jennifer Holbert of Jen Holbert – Real Estate Agent

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Holbert.

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been interested in real estate in one way or another for as long as I can remember. Even as a kid, I loved looking at houses, noticing what made each one different, and thinking about how spaces could be designed or improved (The Sims, anyone?). At the time, I never really thought of that as something that would become a career.

I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and went into teaching for a few years. When COVID hit, I was in graduate school, and like a lot of people, I had some time to really think about what I wanted my life and career to look like. I realized I had the freedom to choose a different direction, and real estate kept coming back to me. I became interested in owning rental properties, and that curiosity led me to start looking more seriously at a career in real estate.

I joined a team at Keller Williams and immediately felt like I had found what I was looking for. I loved the combination of working closely with people, problem-solving, negotiating, understanding the market, design, and getting to be involved in such an important moment in someone’s life. I also loved that it gave me a way to use everything I had learned about Austin over the years to help other people find their place in the city.

Since then, my career has continued to grow in ways I’m really grateful for. I’m now with Compass and part of the Speed & Neuren Group, the number one real estate team in Austin. My husband and I also own multiple properties and have been through our own builds and renovations, so I bring firsthand experience as both a homeowner and investor, which has shaped the way I advise my clients.

Austin has been home to me for a long time, and I genuinely love getting to help people put down roots here, whether they’re buying their first home, moving across town, or relocating from somewhere completely new. It’s been really rewarding to build a career that brings together so many things I’ve always loved: homes, design, strategy, this city, and most importantly, helping people.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think growth will always come with challenges, especially when you’re continually pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. For me, one of the biggest has been learning how to handle rejection. It’s never been something that came naturally to me, and real estate is a business where you inevitably hear “no,” lose opportunities, or have things not work out the way you hoped.

Over time, I’ve had to learn not to take those moments so personally. A big part of that has been grounding my identity and value in God rather than in other people’s opinions of me or in the outcome of a particular opportunity. I haven’t mastered it, but I’ve gotten much better at it with practice. Learning to keep showing up, even when the answer might be no, has stretched me in ways I didn’t expect and ultimately made me both a stronger person and a better agent.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a real estate agent with Compass and part of the Speed & Neuren Group. I work with buyers and sellers at all different stages, from first-time homebuyers and people relocating to Austin to seasoned buyers and sellers.

One thing that sets me apart is the way I look at a house from several different angles at once. I naturally notice the architecture, materials, craftsmanship, layout, and the details that make a home feel special, but I’m also thinking about value, resale potential, location, and how that property will serve someone long-term. My husband and I own multiple properties and have been through our own builds and renovations, so I bring an investment-minded perspective along with a genuine knowledge and love of design.

That comes into play in a lot of different ways. With sellers, I love helping prepare and position a home so buyers connect with it, whether that means larger improvements or just a few thoughtful design and presentation decisions. With buyers, I’m looking beyond, “Do you like this house?” and helping them think through quality, value, potential, and whether it really fits their life.

I especially love working with first-time homebuyers because there are so many questions when you’re buying a home for the first time, and there should be. I really enjoy walking people through the process, explaining what to expect, and helping them make a thoughtful first investment. I also specialize in guiding clients through new construction and renovations, from layouts and upgrades to finishes and materials, helping them understand where it makes sense to spend, where they can save, and which choices will hold up over time.

The people who know me well would probably say honesty is one of the qualities that makes me a good agent. There have absolutely been houses I’ve talked buyers out of and conversations with sellers where I’ve had to say something they probably didn’t want to hear. My goal is always to give people the same advice I would want if it were my own money and my own home.

Being part of Compass and the Speed & Neuren Group also gives my clients access to an incredible amount of experience, technology, market knowledge, and relationships throughout Austin, including connections that can help uncover opportunities before they ever reach the broader market.

More than anything, though, I’m proud of the trust I’ve built with my clients. Buying or selling a home is a huge financial decision, but it’s also incredibly personal. People are choosing where they’ll raise their children, start a new chapter, build wealth, or say goodbye to a home that has meant a lot to them. I don’t take it lightly that I get invited into those decisions. I want my clients to feel like they had someone in their corner who paid attention, told them the truth, thought strategically, and genuinely cared about the outcome.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from trips to Estes Park, Colorado with my family. We would feed chipmunks on Prospect Mountain, my dad and I would walk into town to get donuts at Bunny’s, hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, and spend time wandering around town. I absolutely loved it there and remember dreaming that I would live there one day.

Travel has always been really special to me. Another memory that stands out is traveling through France with my choir group in middle school. We sang in Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day and even had the opportunity to sing in Notre-Dame. At that age, getting to experience so much history, beauty, and a completely different culture made a huge impression on me. I think those experiences are a big part of why I still have such a deep love of travel today.
