Meet Nicholas Howlett of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Howlett.

Hi Nicholas, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started producing music in 2017, teaching myself production and developing my sound. That passion grew into a career in recording, mixing, and audio engineering, with over 6 years of professional commercial studio experience.

Since then, I’ve worked across R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Alternative, and more, with credits involving That Mexican OT, PnB Rock, The History Channel, and Netflix’s Stranger Things, while contributing to music with millions of streams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were times I wanted to give up. But I knew what I wanted and in the type of person to really lock in what I wanted. From sleeping on the studio couch, sleeping in my car, and even giving every pay check that I was getting from Nike to my mentor to learn how to record and mix. Had times where a gun was put to my head, things thrown at me. But even through all of that I still absolutely love what I do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
-I’m a music producer and audio engineer specializing in R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Alternative, and modern experimental sounds. I focus on bringing an artist’s vision to life through production, recording, vocal engineering, and mixing, while making sure every record feels unique and professional.

-I’m most proud of building my career from the ground up since 2017 and turning a passion for music into real-world credits with artists and projects including That Mexican OT, PnB Rock, The History Channel, and Netflix’s Stranger Things, along with 5.6 million streams.

-What sets me apart is that I approach every record from both a producer’s and engineer’s perspective. I’m not just focused on making something sound good—I focus on understanding the artist, their identity, and what the song needs to connect with the listener.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just take the risk. In this industry everything is a risk. You gotta duck your head down and do the work. No one is going to do it for you. I tell artists all the time, coming to the studio should be like working out. How do you expect to get stronger if you’re not in the gym? Even with all of my success I still want more. I still strive for more. Don’t get comfortable.
