Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailyn Harris.
Hi Kailyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
While at the University of Texas, studying Studio Art, I stumbled across a flyer for an interest meeting regarding the formation of a Black creative collective on campus during my sophomore year. I instantly made a note of the meeting date because there wasn’t an organization catered to Black creatives on campus when I had arrived my freshman year, and I wanted to know more about what the org would potentially offer. Fast-forward three months, and I was on the executive board as the Creative Director for the new organization, now known as Noire. As the Creative Director, I was able to observe just how many people were interested in our organization and how it was needed for Black creatives on campus by how many students responded to our open calls for our photoshoots and magazine. Now, as the Co-Chair, I’m working to expand our reach and visibility on campus so that we can create more partnerships on campus and grow our student community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In its first year, Noire had to navigate building its own community, gaining visibility and distinction among the many organizations already on campus, and, for members on the executive board, we had to balance our student responsibilities with our dedication to promoting and pouring into the organization.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, my main medium is photography, and I’ve been inspired by artists like Rahim Fortune, Carrie Mae Weems, and Cindy Sherman. I also work in transmedia and performance, often drawing on my background in dance, finding new ways to incorporate the body and movement as concepts into my work. As a creative in Noire, I’ve been most proud of working on our magazine and giving life to the magazine by contributing to its photography and editing.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be when I was doing competitive gymnastics and got to travel with my teammates to Colorado for our Regionals competition. It snowed while we were there, and we got to spend a day at a small amusement park before competing the next day.
