Conversations with Hiram Molina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hiram Molina.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hey I’m Honey Hiram Molina, front man and lead guitar player from The Honey Hiram Band. I’m an infantry Marine from South Texas turned blues man. Starting in south Texas I came from the classical world of music from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky, then being enlightened by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddie King, Marcus King. The transition from military to musician was harder than expected. Many sleepless nights in my car trying to figure out life in a new city where no one knows my name. Then someone opened their doors to me helped me out. That granted the opportunity to move and started pursuing music. Playing coffee shops and anything that I could. That got my my first acoustic tour. It was all over central Texas. Immediately after I wanted a band and wanted to play almost every stage in Austin possible. Started attending “Jams” the most prevalent one I attend is at King Bee on east 12th. Where the band first had its inception. Three men got together and jammed and it felt real and like home. I asked if they wanted to play again next week at the jam and then that snowballed to playing nearly every venue in Austin and two festivals. I couldn’t have done it without Dustin Sether (drums) and Mike Vasquez (bassist).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. The main struggles are marketing and timing. When you’re an independent artist you have to rely mostly on yourself and building that social media platform to drive a presence for shows. Also trying to make yourself marketable enough to stand out amongst the crowd. The social media aspect and trying to stay current while being genuine is a big tasks especially when you have a 9-5 while trying to juggle a band and also run a business. It’s a very hard job but I’m so blessed to have it. I have been inspired by Kohanna, Kristen Taylor and Jacob West of the Texas Rebels. They are local artists who really have a solid social media presence and they give me advice and tips. Without the community I think it would’ve been a lot harder. I’m so grateful and blessed to be apart of such a supportive community of musicians here in Austin, truly blessed

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a jazz blues rock jam band from Austin Texas. The highlight of our group is being a band that highlights some of Austin’s best. Every show is never the same. My fear is being stale and predictable. So for every show we bring different musicians have you be another guitarist, brass player, keys, vocalist, drummer. We will bring you on to have fun and show you off. We’ve been apart of two festivals in 2026 and the core members stay the same we just add more for the audience enjoyment and for ours to. I tell every musician that my stage is theirs so if they feel comfortable to bring an amp and hang out you are welcome anytime.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My childhood revolved around music. I’ve been in choirs since I was a baby. I think the best though was when i auditioned for a musical for a local production. My sister then got inspired and auditioned also. Spending time with her and my friends working on music would probably be one of my childhood highlights. My little sister is my best friend. She has been there supporting me through everything. We now have a project together and I’m so excited and proud of her. Love you kiddo!
