Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Fischer.
Hi Julie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are located in Marfa, a very small town in far West Texas. Marfa, known as an art colony, is a popular destination for artists and Big Bend enthusiasts.
I am the fourth owner of Marfa Art Supply and am very happy to provide art supplies of all sorts to the area as, I believe, I am the only real art supply between Austin and El Paso.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel I have had a pretty smooth beginning with the shop and am quite grateful for the success that I have had. My only struggle seems to be the size of the my shop. With less than 450 sqft I am certainly unable to carry all of the items I would like and am rapidly running out of space. Though most folks enjoy the compact and accessible feeling of the place.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been a practicing artist for most of my life and enjoy many mediums in fine art, but also love working in film, writing, sewing and cooking, though ultimately, painting in watercolors and oils are my true loves.
I wouldn’t say I was known for my painting! At least not yet. But I do bake cakes for a local cafe for which I am known 🙂 And I had the opportunity to work in a Duplass Brothers film many years ago. So that’s something.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Well, I suppose I was known for a hot minute in the 1st grade for winning an award for a drawing I made. It was a poster for some bicycle safety awareness program. I believe I still have that poster. And in the 4th grade I wrote a couple of plays that my elementary school let me put up. I had some hustle back then. And a very supportive teacher.
