Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Johnson.
Hi Josh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From World Champion to Independent Disruptor: My Journey to Intrepid Fit Co
People always ask me how I ended up building a fitness brand from scratch, and honestly, the roots go way back. My story really started in Houston, Texas, when I was 15 turning 16 and discovered competitive cheerleading. But my obsession with tumbling started long before that—I was self-teaching back tucks on the playground in kindergarten, just like a lot of other young boys. Once I actually joined a gym and threw myself into cheer, things clicked instantly. I progressed so fast that I eventually made the move to Dallas to cheer for some of the top teams in the state.
That chapter culminated in 2012 when I won both the USASF World Championship and the NCA National Championships. I carved out a real name for myself in the sport, too—I was heavily known for having one of the best toe touches in the game. Cheerleading gave me an absolute backbone of steel. It taught me character, work ethic, and that relentless determination always pays off.
Hitting the Wall and Pivoting
As much as I loved All-Star cheer, the transition into coaching brought a massive wave of stress. The environment is high-energy and high-intensity, and carrying that weight while trying to earn a college degree, manage a social life, and handle constant travel took a serious toll. The sheer pressure pushed me toward burnout, and I honestly felt like I was running away from a sport I had grown to love so much.
Fortunately, I had already laid some academic groundwork by earning my degree in business management in 2013. I knew I was capable of more, so I decided to pivot into personal training and fitness, getting certified through ISSA in personal training and sports nutrition. To learn the inner workings of the industry, I worked across the Houston area at major commercial spots like LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, and Blink Fitness, submerging myself in the business side of fitness.
The Austin Chapter and F45
In search of a fresh canvas to grow a brand, I made the move to Austin. That’s when I joined F45, and my career scaled rapidly. I became the head trainer across three different locations, mastering everything from group fitness coaching and cueing to sales, community events, and studio management.
At the same time, I was quietly laying the tracks for my own vision: Intrepid Fit Co. When my time at F45 naturally came to a close, I decided to fully bet on myself. I went back to my roots, teaching private tumbling lessons while simultaneously pouring everything I had into building the Intrepid brand. I had to learn every backend trade from scratch—photography, digital content creation, marketing—you name it.
What Intrepid Is Today
What we’ve built with Intrepid is a direct reaction to the massive, impersonal commercial gyms dominating the Austin fitness landscape. While other facilities pack 200 to 300 people into a room where you’re just a number, Intrepid is exclusive, personal, and intentional.
Under one roof, I’ve managed to mesh everything I love: tumbling for youth athletes, and functional fitness and nutrition for adults. Whether working with kids or grown-ups, we treat everyone like the high-performing athletes they are, helping them understand why their bodies move the way they do.
At the end of the day, the name Intrepid is about being brave and stepping out on faith. It’s a rejection of toxic perfectionism and the monotonous corporate rat race. It’s about going hard when nobody is watching—when you’re tired, scared, or standing alone. I’m just incredibly stoked to bring that energy to people, show them what they’re capable of, and help them realize that if you trust your grind, you will always end up on top.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The Realest Obstacles: Building Alone and From Scratch
Building something like this from scratch isn’t glamorous every day, and I’ve had to face some very real challenges. For starters, building a community here in Austin as a minority hasn’t always been easy. Working completely alone for so long made it feel incredibly isolating—there were definitely moments where I questioned if this was ever going to happen, or if it even should happen. Learning to push past that self-doubt and trust the process was a battle in itself.
Financially, it was a grind. I didn’t have access to massive loans or heavy-hitting investors; I was funding this off what I made doing private lessons just one day a week until I lucked up and found the right spot. When you’re building entirely by yourself with no real team, and you don’t have a ton of family or local friends around—or you feel that lack of support from peers—it gets heavy.
Another huge hurdle was the mental game: trying not to get caught up in the comparison trap. You look around at other massive facilities in Austin with endless equipment and fancy setups, and you start second-guessing yourself. But I had to check myself and realize: I’m not building a gym based on a fancy facility; I’m building it on my talent, my coaching abilities, and my personality.
Patience has also been a massive lesson. Accepting that I’m new, that I’m starting fresh, and that growth takes time instead of happening overnight—that’s tough. But now that it’s here, things feel a lot smoother. I’m always shooting for better, but looking back, realizing I made this happen with my own two hands and pure grit makes every hurdle worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I Do and My Specialization
Unified Training Under One Roof: I operate Intrepid Fit Co here in Austin, where I bridge two worlds that rarely live under the same roof: specialized tumbling instruction for youth athletes and functional fitness, strength training, and sports nutrition for adults.
Performance-Driven Coaching: Whether I’m coaching a young athlete through tumbling mechanics or helping an adult build physical longevity, my specialization is teaching people how their bodies move so they can unlock real, sustainable performance.
What I’m Known For
Elite Athletic Roots: Long before I started training clients, I was deeply embedded in the competitive cheer world. I’m a former world champion, having won the USASF World Championship and NCA National Championships in 2012, and I was widely known across the sport for having one of the best toe touches in the game.
Relentless Energy and Grit: In the gym, people know me for bringing high-octane energy, pushing hard, and holding a standard of excellence. But I’m also known for being real—I don’t preach toxic perfectionism; I preach showing up as a human being who is willing to put in the work.
What Sets Intrepid Apart
Boutique Exclusivity: The Austin fitness landscape is flooded with massive commercial facilities and studios packing 200 to 300 members into a room where you’re just a face in the crowd. Intrepid is the complete opposite: it’s intimate, exclusive, and hyper-personalized so that every single person gets the attention, care, and visibility they deserve.
Built on Talent, Not Venture Capital: I didn’t launch this with massive investor funding, corporate loans, or a pre-built team. I built it from the ground up off the sweat of my own private lessons. Intrepid isn’t powered by a flashy corporate brand name—it’s built entirely on my coaching ability, my personality, and raw, boots-on-the-ground execution.
What I’m Most Proud Of
Betting on Myself Against the Odds: Hands down, I am most proud of the fact that I actually pulled the trigger and built this vision into a reality from scratch.
The Power of Resilience: Building this alone in Austin as a minority, without a massive safety net of family or local peers, was an uphill climb. There were plenty of lonely, high-doubt days where it felt like an impossible mountain. Looking back at those hurdles—and now standing in a space I carved out with my own hands, living out the Intrepid ethos of going hard when nobody is watching—that is what makes me most proud.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The Most Important Lesson I’ve Learned
If I had to boil down everything I’ve been through—from winning a world championship in 2012 to navigating burnout, moving to Austin, and bootstrapping Intrepid Fit Co from scratch—the single most important lesson I’ve learned is this: You have to bet on yourself and trust your own grind, even when nobody is watching and you’re standing entirely alone.
For a long time, building this business in a new city as a minority without massive investors, loans, or a huge local safety net was terrifying. There were plenty of lonely nights where I looked around and wondered if it was ever going to happen, or if I even had the right to make it happen.
I fell into the classic comparison trap—looking at massive commercial facilities in Austin with hundreds of members and endless fancy equipment, and second-guessing everything because my setup was raw and started from the ground up.
That’s when the real breakthrough hit: Your success isn’t tied to having the fanciest facility or playing into society’s rat race. It’s built on your talent, your authentic personality, your resilience, and the actual value you bring to the people standing in front of you.
That realization is literally where the name Intrepid came from. It’s about having the bravery to step out on faith, reject toxic perfectionism, and trust that if you put in the hard work behind the scenes when you’re tired, scared, or doubting yourself, you will end up on top. You don’t need a crowd cheering you on to become the person you know you’re capable of being. You just have to decide to go hard for yourself.
